Just interested to hear your impressions of these names! I am sure I?ll get flamed for saying so, but really, really want to avoid names that are too popular (I have a very unusual name and I love that everyone remembers it!)

So here goes:

Maeve (with Mae as nn? would be keen on Irish name as have Irish heritage. How common is it in Ireland?)
Nora ? on its own or as a nn for below
Eleanor ? shortened to Nora (not a fan of Ellie, Ella etc)
Georgia
Audrey

We also considered Aoife but is it becoming too popular?

Maeve

Audrey or Nora (Dora?)

dulciejones · 18/05/2010 01:48

I like Audrey.
My favourite at the moment is Rosalind, nn Ros.

I also quite like Nell for Eleanor.

strandedatsea · 18/05/2010 02:23

Audrey

NotStressedAtAll · 18/05/2010 02:46

Dulcie, I love Rosalind too, but it's my Mum's name :-) Thinking of going for the ever popular Rose as a middle name instead. Or Mary. Or Mae if we don't go for Maeve as a first name...

A lot of you seem to like Audrey :-) What could we use as a nn?

Eleanor, due to the magnificent Eleanor of Aquitaine. A seriously impressive role model.

Hedwig3 · 18/05/2010 09:40

Nora

Audrey

Both gorgeous

oliviacrumble · 18/05/2010 09:53

Maeve not that common at all here in Ireland, not for babies at any rate.

Lots of older Maeves though.

Audrey makes me think of Corrie (am probably years out of date with that opinion).

I like Eleanor, associate Nora with elderly farmers wife, or Nora Barnacle, ie very "old lady" name.

AndieWalsh · 18/05/2010 09:54

Maeve is gorgeous.

LaDiDaDi · 18/05/2010 09:54

I like Maeve, Nora and Eleanor (know a few little Eleanors though if that's an issue).

minipie · 18/05/2010 09:57

I really like Maeve and Audrey. Definitely think Audrey is due for a surge in popularity.

I like Eleanor but not Nora, makes me think Nora Batty. Nell is nice.

Not so keen on Aoife (though I don't think it's especially popular?). Georgia is ok.

SoupDragon · 18/05/2010 10:01

I like Maeve best, followed by Eleanor and Georgia. I really dislike Nora and Audrey

theagedparent · 18/05/2010 11:20

Love Audrey or Maeve

loobylu3 · 18/05/2010 11:20

Maeve- beautiful, especially if you have Irish heritage. I have no idea how popular it is in Ireland.

Nora- prefer as nn for Eleanor but it is sweet.

Eleanor- gorgeous classic but would use Nora/ Nell as dislike Ellie too.

Audrey- like a lot but it is v popular in The States so that trend may spread here.

Georgia- not my favourite but fine.

All good choices

Pasiphae · 18/05/2010 11:53

Maeve and Audrey are fab.
Georgia is faded and Eleanor is more popular than the other 2. Nora is fine as well, just not as pretty.

emmyloo2 · 18/05/2010 12:18

Maeve or Audrey. Audrey was my grandmother's name. I love it. Have always loved Maeve.

I also like Nieve which I think is Irish.

swanandduck · 18/05/2010 12:31

You asked how popular Maeve is in Ireland.

To be honest, while it's a very ordinary name in Ireland, it's quite dated now and most Maeves would be in their 40s and 50s. You would rarely hear of a baby in Ireland being called Maeve anymore. It would be the equivalent of a name like Sue or Brenda in England.
I like Georgia or Eleanor.

Ineedsomesleep · 18/05/2010 12:59

Maeve - don't know about Ireland, but I've only ever met one little girl with this name and she is 5. Prefer Maeve to Mae btw.
Nora - never met one but think of Nora Batty.
Eleanor - only know 2.
Georgia - very popular in the 90's.
Audrey - don't know any but think more of Corrie than Hepburn or Tatu.

Would avoid Aoife like the plague. Nearly every little girl in my town is called Evie.

dulciejones · 18/05/2010 14:43

Emmyloo, Im sure most Irish people using the name would spell it, Niamh. TBH, Ive never seen it spelt Nieve or Neve other than when we were living in the States.

dulciejones · 18/05/2010 14:44

Still trying to think of a NN for Audrey for you.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 18/05/2010 14:46

Maeve - lovely. My Favourite
Eleanor - lovely. I, like you, don't like Ellie, but she may end up with that as a nn by default. don't like Nora (sorry)
Georgia - ok
Audrey - very 1950's. Not very nice-sounding IMO

Jamieandhismagictorch · 18/05/2010 14:47

What about Marianne, with Mari, or Nan as a nn?

Jamieandhismagictorch · 18/05/2010 14:50

Also, would you consider Margaret ?( nn Maggie/Peggy)

pixiestix · 18/05/2010 15:09

LOVE Nora
