Lola?

Undecided on this - it will always remind me of the Kinks, but we both like it and think it goes well with our DD's name, Poppy; fun, not too pretentious but not too traditional either. What do you think?

I didn't know the "Lady of sorrows" meaning -but if refers to the Virgin Mary why is it considered a slutty name ?
I just like it, it's melodious and pretty, each to their own

Nope - for me it's still

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lolita

that comes to mind.

thecoffeelady · 13/05/2010 12:04

I love the name Lola, but DP said no when we had DD. I know an Iola which is more unsual. If you both like the name then go for it.

Family openly laughed in my face when I said that we were naming our first Edie if it was a girl and even more when they learn that we have chosen Nancy as a girls name if #2 is a girl

Only you can name your child and if others don't like it, well thats just tough.

cumbria81 · 13/05/2010 12:20

It's fucking awful.

Sorry.

forkhandles · 13/05/2010 12:22

I don't see it as being sexualised at all, but it's very popular. I know three Lola's all about 3 or 4yrs old.

yummymummie1 · 13/05/2010 21:59

i love the name lola i think it is sooooo pretty wanted to use it myself until my husband said it was a porn stars name or somethin so he didnt like it but even after he has told me that i still think its a preety name although i still sing everytime i hear it lol

seashore · 13/05/2010 22:02

Don't like it at all, to me it's another cleb based name, trying too hard. Sorry!

amandine07 · 13/05/2010 22:13

I think this name is so cute, i don't have kids so am not familiar with the cartoon/book character. To me it has associations with cute little girlies, those songs do not come to mind when I hear the name!

I really like it, and it was on my shortlist. I have only been put off as my family didn't like it and I really like a few others so it wasn't difficult to discount it as I needed to narrow my choices. Choose it if you like it. I agree with the Katie Price comment - we don't think the name Katie is bad - despite the fact that she is

nooka · 14/05/2010 06:15

But Katie is and always has been a mainstream name. Katie Price is just "a" Katie, not "the" Katie (after all that's what Jordan was for) there are many many Katies. Whereas Lola is (still) really associated with Lolita plus the interesting trannie connotations. Charlie and Lola does change that to some extent, but personally I think that that makes it cutesie. So I woudl conclude that it might be a sweet baby name, but she would need something more substantive for growing up. But then I think the same thing about Poppy really .

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 14/05/2010 08:22

if i wasn't married to a man with a difficult surname I'd def be naming my daughter lola

Rockbird · 14/05/2010 09:03

How can it be sexualised when it's the name of a really popular cartoon character for kids? It wouldn't occur to me to think of Bazzer (and I am just about old enough), but I do hum the charlie and lola theme. That song was 1978 so I don't think it'll trouble too many people now.

MamaLazarou · 14/05/2010 09:14

Stripper/transvestite.

DeFluffy · 14/05/2010 09:28

For me, too girly and also stipper /hooker connotations, same way 'Jordan' would have.

Also I think everyone knows the song don't they? Regardless of age? I'm only 34 and I started singing it as soon as I read 'Lola'. Am I now classed asa old??

Also I can't imagine calling someone in authority either Poppy or Lola, eg Dr. Poppy, or a teacher with the names. That may be because of my age, there are no real 'poppies' / 'lolas' of that age i don't think, but they are so girly and babyish it's difficult to imagine anyone taking them seriously as a grown woman.

That maybe because I have no imagination though

I love it. I've only ever known one child called Lola and she was the prettiest thing you could imagine. Lola will always be a pretty name now because of her.
