Would you consider a name that also belongs to an pet in your family?

Just let me get it straight I would not be naming DD after said animal. My DH is furious I would even consider this saying: "we are not naming DD after your parent's stupid fat bulldog". She is still alive btw

problem is, everyone else will think you are naming her after the dog, even if you know you are not

if you can be bothered to explain to all and sundry you are NOT naming your dd after said dog, then do it

He won't hear of it! She is also a nice dog but pretty ugly all the same

I wouldnt name my child with the same name any close relatives had as a pet. I dont think its a good idea....can i ask what the name is as you could always try to find a similar varient?? good luck x

We have the same problem - really like 'Tess' but that's the name of a dog of a close family memeber. Still, the dog won't be round forever, I suppose and I'm not sure I'm all that bothered anyway.

We had this problem, a name we really liked is also the name of a family members dog. We decided against it for now. I think it all depends on how much you like the name.

A friend just called their son max... their farm dog is called Max! i think its a little weird.

We considered, but decided against, doing this. We foolishly gave our first choice boys' name to the dog several years before the dcs came along.

I really don't think it matters. I've heard of quite a few people naming their babies the same as a pet. You presumably gave your pet that name because you like it - so if you like it why not?

How will the child feel? It is possible that even though you say "of course you weren't named after the dog" there will always be this lingering doubt. I wouldn't do it.

My friend gave her dd the same name as one of my dogs. When my 2 year old was first introduced to the little girl he laughed and said, 'that's not Daisy, that's a baby'....

Actually, I realise I've already done it. DD2 has the same name that I once gave to a budgie - the budgie is long since gone, of course.

Snap, LuluF. My DD has the same name as DH's childhood budgie. Budgie obviously long gone and DD is definitely not named after it; it just happened to be my favourite name. And DH's family had to be reminded that they'd once had a budgie of the same name.

Oh, and I have a cousin whose DS has the same name as our GP's dog, although sadly GPs and dog are all long gone.

The bulldog is called Phoebe and is on borrowed time. My 2 yo DS can already say "Phoebe no, naughty, in your bed" so I think it might be useful

I wouldn't either but it doesn't really matter though does it? Not many other people would make that association anyway.

Lucy is a gorgeous name but my dog when I was little was called Lucy......

We used our cat's name as a middle name for dd2, not 'after' her, but just because we loved the name and it went well. I am so glad we did, because we had to have the cat put to sleep unexpectedly when dd2 was just 5 weeks old. She was a beloved pet and now it's quite nice that dd2 has her name as a middle name.

If I named my little one after my budgies I'd have to choose between Dubonnet and Soda...

(Both of whom are now in budgie heaven but I still don't think they work )

Dubonnet was originally named after a horse! Virginia Holgate (as was) had a horse when she was young named Dubonnet/Dubby, and as a ten year old girl I thought it was a fantastic name. It was only when my Gran took my Mum to one side to ask if I'd been through the "cupboard" that I bothered to find out what it actually was.

Soda came some 10 years later (Dubby fell off his perch at an impressive 17) and was an obvious accompaniment.

Going back on topic, I have considered Bryn for my babe, but that's one of my mum's horses' names, so it's been vetoed .

Not a living pet, no. BUT DD#2 does have the same name as a much loved pony

I couldn't use Bella or Max after two beloved but passed on dogs we had growing up .... they were around for 16 years so the memories are too much of a link!

I knew someone called Timothy who was apparantly names after the family goldfish ...

A friend of my granny had a lovely yellow lab called Emma but when her first grand-daughter arrived & was also named Emma the poor dog became Honey instead - I remember feeling very aggrieved on the dog's behalf (being about 10 and mad about dogs and not at all bothered about babies )
