Sylvia / Sylvie??

Hello, oh wise baby namers!

I just can't choose a girl's name for my dc2 due at end of June. The list just gets longer rather than shorter! Boy's name has been easily sorted out.

I'm really rather liking Sylvia but think it might be a bit "hard" sounding with our surname (Brown) which made me consider Sylvie instead. Are they still considered too old-ladyish?

Other names I like today are:
Laila Rose (not sure on middle name)
Rosa Alice
Elodie (too close to my dd Amalie??)
Leonie
Rowena (always strikes me as a bit hard sounding but I kind of like it)
Sylvia
Sylvie

Would use any combination as first name, middle name. I also would love to use Loveday or Juliet as a middle name but dh would need some convincing!

Please help! Dh totally useless and my brain is frazzled!

Sylvie Alice Brown sounds lovely.

meggymegmegs · 30/04/2010 11:53

I really like Sylvie.

nighbynight · 30/04/2010 11:57

Sylvia Brown is the guardian in Ballet Shoes.
I think it sounds lovely, just the right contrast of sounds.
Loveday is a family name in my family, I think it is beautiful.

If you choose Sylvia, she will face a lifetime of people saying "is that with a y or an i?" and also singing Who is Sylvia, and Sylvia's Mother said... at her. But I guess all names have some conditions attached to them!

Actually, I think all your names are lovely.

kailie · 30/04/2010 11:59

oooh I like sylvie alice.

Elodie is pretty but too close to amalie.
Other names are nice too - but Sylvie Alice is a winner!

recireci · 30/04/2010 12:26

Much prefer Sylvia to Sylvie. Somehow Sylvie is a bit TTH.

MercyMe · 30/04/2010 13:37

I love Sylvie, think it is beautiful - will be the name of next dd if we have one.

mathanxiety · 30/04/2010 15:56

Sylvia Loveday Brown would be gorgeous.

I like Rowena, Leonie and Rosa too, but Sylvia stands out, for me. Not so keen on Elodie, which always sounds to me as if Melody has been mangled.

Magaly · 30/04/2010 16:00

I liked it five years ago when prg with dc2, but oddly now I have gone off it totally.

Leonora with Leonie for short is lovely though.

Leonora Alice or Leonora Rose

WickedWitchSouthWest · 30/04/2010 19:25

thank you ladies!

A friend has just thrown the name "Harmony" at me which is so different to anything else I've thought of so my list is still growing

Sylvia is my mums name!
I think it is a great name and I've actually never met another one so at least the name will tick the "not too common" box - not that it matters if you love the name.

mathanxiety · 30/04/2010 20:25

Harmony sounds as if it might end up being the name of some kind of AD if it isn't already.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 30/04/2010 20:27

I love Sylvie

Also Leonie and Roas

What about:

Claudia
Serena

Jamieandhismagictorch · 30/04/2010 20:28

Rosa !

SpringHeeledJack · 30/04/2010 20:29

WickedWitchSouthWest · 30/04/2010 20:35

Jamieandhismagictorch · 30/04/2010 21:40

Pleeese choose Serena. I am not going to have any more babies and someone needs to use it

< guilt trip >

WickedWitchSouthWest · 02/05/2010 12:13

thanks everyone!

Girls shortlist is now:
Serena Rose
Sylvie Alice
Laila Rose
Edie Juliet

Now have to work on dh!

Thanks for all the input, much appreciated

OP posts:
Magaly · 02/05/2010 12:25

Edie Juliet or Sylvie Alice

Harmony is terrible sorry! an AD or a bcp!

WickedWitchSouthWest · 02/05/2010 12:29

lol Magaly! Yeah, it was a bit off the wall. I've always had a soft spot for Hermione but couldn't convince the husband so thought by softening it into Harmony it might become more workable. Apparently not
