Ladies, I don't want to get inappropriately lairy on a baby names thread, but Eve Emanuel? Really? And don't you find that Cara Emmanuel requires a tricky glottal stop to transfer between the two words?

Like Vivien and Nicole a lot.

Elizabeth Emanuel sounds good, but you'd get sick of the comments about Di's wedding dress (old saddo emoticon).

Eliza was my immediate thought.

Aren't people just listing their fav names here? The point is to get a name that gos with the surname.

beezmum · 13/04/2010 00:17

Looking at t he names given above, these flow well with Emanuel:
Charlotte
Sophie
Frances
Madeleine
Marie (if pronounced the French way)
Vivien(ne)
Elizabeth (despite connotations)
Sally
Suzy
Daisy
Alice

If it doesn't trip off the tongue don't go with it. Ones ending with y seem to work well.

piprabbit · 13/04/2010 00:25

I think names ending with an 'n' or 's' sounds are good with your surname.

Lauren
Caitlin
Vivienne
Marianne
Cerys
Francis
Lois
Alice

Definitely not names ending with 'e' or 'y' sounds.

So Catherine sounds OK, but Katie is hard to say.

bellissima · 13/04/2010 08:57

Oh dear, I think that an 'n' sound doesn't go! Agree on the 's' sound - Frances very nice name as well (Francis to me is a boy's name), as is Alice. Charlotte and Harriet also go.

mathanxiety · 13/04/2010 17:27

I dunno, I think an N sound echoes the N sound in Emanuel nicely without clashing.

I agree about the A sound -- too much of a stop before the E of the surname. I think a long E would work if Emanuel starts with a short E (as in Emma). If it's more like Eemanuel, then no EE ending to the first name.

Any softer consonant sounds and even a final T or TH would work (Kate, Colette, Suzette).

judyem · 14/04/2010 19:51

Thank you so much for all the suggestions! I agree about the n and l sounds - love Marianne and elena but think they're a bit of a mouthful with Emanuel. We have two Frances's in the family already, so that's out, Catherine's my eldest's middle name!

I really like Elizabeth (maybe a good middle name to avoid the diana issue) also Charlotte. We always have to spell our surname so an straightforward first name's a must!
