We have other names we like but we keep coming back to this one though for our little girl due in September. We have 2 boys called Jacob and Sawyer already (and not bothered and it being 2 Js and an S) and also thinking of using my nan's name as a middle name so she would be Jemima Eleanor Preston.

What do you think?

love it if our niece wasnt jemima would have been my name for dd4 but couldnt use it because of that

Greensleeves · 07/04/2010 11:34

I like it, and I like Jem and Mimi for nicknames too

Eglu · 07/04/2010 11:37

I love it. DH will not allow it for me

AllieW · 07/04/2010 11:38

I'm afraid I think of Jemima Puddleduck and the doll from PlaySchool. But there are plenty of famous Jemimas (Jemima Khan etc) and I suppose it's pretty in the abstract.

BarbaMamma · 07/04/2010 11:41

Puddleduck, sorry.

WitchyWooWoo · 07/04/2010 11:45

another puddleduck here.. eleanor is very pretty though

5DollarShake · 07/04/2010 12:01

I admit I do think of puddleduck too, but it is a lovely name - and people would soon lose that association as she comes to 'own' the name.

AngryPixie · 07/04/2010 12:13

Love it

Angela82 · 07/04/2010 12:15

Yes I was thinking the same as you 5dollarshake about the puddleduck thing. And also, I know it's a childrens book but I don't think many children at school would make that association? It would be more adults wouldn't it? If it's just adults it doesn't bother me really... I actually think a puddleduck association is quite cute too? Am I the only one?!

I love it too and it has been on my list for years (and I banned my sister from using it ) but I recently met a rather precocious nine year old and it has put me off a bit.
Will see.

gemcgem · 07/04/2010 12:41

im a gemma an the kids at school thought it was funny to call me jemima puddle duck

irisblue · 07/04/2010 14:25

I love it and have a gorgeous friend called Jemima (who is called Mima). Think it's really pretty and don't think kids today would really associate it with Jemima Puddleduck. Doesn't matter what the adults think!

JosephineClaire · 07/04/2010 16:15

It's lovely - and I think the Beatrix Potter link is rather sweet

marialuisa · 07/04/2010 16:26

It's one of the most popular names at DD's school! The puddleduck thing seems to be more adults, none of DD's friends would have a clue who Jemima Puddleduck was and they're a pretty well-read bunch.

randomimposter · 07/04/2010 16:44

lovely
all your DS names are lovely!

Jem and Mimi both work.

PassthePercyPigs · 07/04/2010 17:55

Very pretty and elegant - ignore the Beatrix Potter haters!

ellesabe · 07/04/2010 20:00

I love it! Have you read the Jemima Puddleduck story though? - it's really depressing!

Love it - on my list for a girl too!

Angela82 · 07/04/2010 20:35

I did read it to my son a couple of years ago and I can't remember the story now Ellesabe - I'll read it to him tomorrow night to see what happens... !

Well I think all the comments look pretty positive overall - I don't think that there is any name on the planet that would get 100% positive replies so I'm feeling good about this name now. DH loves the name, it was the first girl's name we really liked from when I was pregnant with Jacob about 5 years ago now

The puddleduck association is really sweet. You could have a framed picture of Jemima in her room.

You're right - no name on earth will get a resounding yes, so if you love it, go for it!

Angela82 · 07/04/2010 20:45

PS I just had to google Kereheppuch Zapostrophe! I knew Jemima was one of the daughters of Job in the Bible but didn't realise the names of the other 2

But yes it is better than that name

It's nice too as the daughters of Job were supposedly known as some of the most beautiful girls at the time and Jemima means 'Dove' too. All nicer associations than puddleduck anyway (not that people would know the other meanings!)

That's a great idea 5dollarshake!

Well, I think it sounds lovely. Very fond of the name myself and your other names with it sound good.

Lionstar · 07/04/2010 20:53

My sister is a Jemima, and I think it is a very lovely name.

We lived in a very rural and conservative Welsh area, so it did stand out! She did get quite a lot of 'puddleduck' references at school, and the whole Play School thing. In fact I was also nicknamed 'Hamble' because of it . She weathered the storm pretty well though.

Her nickname was Mima as a kid, and is now Jem/Jemma.
