Is it too much of a stretch to use Ted as a nn for Wilfred?

I love the name Ted but really don't like any of the full names for which it is short (really don't like any of the Ed- names, and although I don't mind Theodore DH hates it).

I also love Wilfred, as well as all of it's nn potentials - Wilf, Fred etc and wondered if it would be too daft to have Wilfred as a formal name with Ted as a shortening?

I know you don't have to have a full name and could register DS as Ted on the birth certificate but this does limit his options considerably...

I never understand the 'options' bit. If you want to call him Ted, call him Ted.

I don't really either, hana. My brother is Sam, registered as Sam, always been known as Sam. He does get people asking if he's a Samuel all the time tho, as if it matters

Does DH hate Theodore so much that he wouldn't consider it as a middle? It's just that you could then call him Wilfred Theodore (which has a certain ring to it) and would then have the option of calling him Ted in reference to his middle name OR using any of the nns applicable to his first, depending on what seems most appropriate. I think Ted as a nn for Wilfred would be mildly confusing. (Almost as much of a stretch as the whole Kate short for Bob thing from Blackadder.)

call him Edward and have done with it - then just call him Ted his whole life

Why is Ted any more of a stretch from Wilfred than from Edward? I used to know an Alexandra called Sasha. Which would only make sense to you if you were Russian - which she wasn't, anyway. And plenty more people who went by names that didn't seem at all related to their full name.

Name him whatever you like, and nicknmame him whatever you like. Just be prepared to have to explain and to deal with assumptions.

Wilfred would naturally be shortened to 'Fred' I suppose,
people will probably call him Wilf or Fred if they know his proper name, which will be annoying.

Edward = Eddie which I guess got turned into Teddy for some reason. Thus Ted.

Why not go with the cultural zeitgeist and call him Jed.

Too much of a stretch, just call him Ted, it's fine. Many, if not most, people use shortened forms these days. Eg Archie, Max, Zac, Alfie all more popular than the long forms. I know several baby Teds and a Teddy, no longer names on the cert. Ted is quite a strong name like Ben or Zac, it's not cutesy like Alfie etc so won't be babyish on a man. Wilfred is an old man name.

I knew someone who was known to all as Carrot - Wilfred to Ted is nothing in comparison!

Frankly a nickname can come from anywhere and doesn't need to be obviously linked to a name.

I prefer to have a long name with option to use a shorter name/nicknamr
