Pronounciation of Elin

Thinking about the name Elin - I've been assuming we would pronounce it the "Welsh" way rather than the "Scandi" way.

Trouble is, I don't know for sure that what I think is the Welsh way actually is! Could anyone confirm it is pronounced like you would pronounce Elinor?

(I'm Welsh (moved away when tiny), husband is Scandinavian and apparently over there they would say Eee-lin.)

Only a bit Welsh myself, and don't live there so can't speak with much authority, but I know one very Welsh grown up Elin, who pronounces it /eelin/. (Almost everyone else calls her /aylin/ though!)

Welsh speaker here so hopefully know what I'm talking about. Elin would be pronounced with the 'el' sound like in 'elephant'. Like Ellen with an 'i'.

Like Ellen. Elen (which I prefer) is the other Welsh way of spelling that pronunciation.

Our ds3 would have been Elin pronounced the welsh way E for elephant lin

El as in bell, then in.

That's how my 2 friends with this name say it and they're both from West Wales.

Agree with all previous posters (I'm Welsh and have this name...). (Oh, not like Ellen tho - that's a different pronunciation, for Elen.) Remember emphasis on the penultimate syllable in Welsh, so in this case the first syllable. EL-in.
It's a lovely name ( but thanks parents!), feminine, old, unknown origin/meaning but probably somewhere from Helen.

I have to quickly make my joke and say it's pronounced D-O-O-R-M-A-T after seeing the pics of TW wife sunning it up on their multi million pound boat today

Anyway... I would say El-In, Ee-Lin is horrific imo.

I'm Welsh and have a niece called Elin... agree with previous posters about elephants and emphasis on first syllable.

Yes I thought it was probably wrong. But something to consider when choosing a name might be how many people are going to get it wrong at first guess

The only Elin I know is a Swede so I know it as Ee-lin - She's always grumbling that people pronounce (and spell) it a variety of ways.
