Can you choose a good friend's unusual name for baby?

First ups, what does anyone think of the name Savannah?

I've always loved it - and if I have a daughter, would love to call her Savannah Rose.... but here comes the dilemna.

One of my oldest girlfriends is called Savannah and I think she probably feels rather posessive about her name seeing as there are so few of them out there.

Should I ask her in advance if she'd mind if I called my baby Savannah?

What does anyone think? xx

There have been quite a few in the last couple of years, I think.

I'd ask her, she'd be flattered I imagine.

Lovethesea · 16/03/2010 12:37

I don't dislike it but would always think of it as very american - not a bad thing but that's the accent I hear it in :-)

I think that your friend would be flattered.

i really like it but its not unpopular there are 2 Savannahs in my DDs nursery class. And i have heard of a few others. I agree with bucharest she will be flattered if u ask her

bellissima · 16/03/2010 13:25

There's a Savannah in my DD2's class (age 6). Yes ask - I think she would be really pleased.

HelenDoula · 16/03/2010 17:56

Yeah, I would be flattered too .....

lifeas3plus1 · 16/03/2010 19:08

I've replied to your other thread but I'm a Savannah and I love hearing new little babies called Savannah. (Not that I know of any in RL)

I would be very flattered if someone chose the name for their DD.

suwoo · 16/03/2010 19:09

Was just going to say that there is another thread tonight with this name and I see it is yours.

I think she would mind less than if you used the same name as her DD IYSWIM.

TrillianAstra · 16/03/2010 19:19

I'm with suwoo here - when I read the thread I thought you meant use the same name as her baby, which she might not be so happy about, but using her personal name for your baby semms like a compliment.

ellesabe · 24/03/2010 20:10

I bet she'd be really touched.

ellesabe · 24/03/2010 20:10

But yes I would check with her first!

MammyG · 24/03/2010 22:17

I think she would be pleased. But at one point considered calling last DC same name as close friend as love the name but then realised as she (friend) is a regular in my life DD would become 'baby soandso' to differentiate. just a thought.

autumnblaze · 25/03/2010 16:02

love the name ask first though but I bet she would be flattered I would be!

5DollarShake · 25/03/2010 16:06

If she's anyway normal, she will be flattered by it, as opposed to being all possessive and owner-y of it.

But bear in mind that once you ask her, you have to abide by her wishes. If she doesn't like it and you big fat go ahead and do it anyway, it'll probably cause some friction...

AllieW · 25/03/2010 18:23

I would definitely ask. Not keen on the name myself (it makes me think of deserts) but different strokes and all that.
