Basically DH and I can't agree on anything and it's doing my head in . Baby due in 7 weeks and I want to enjoy thinking about names but it's just becoming a tedious circular conversation and I just can't imagine what name DD is going to end up with. I need your help! I'll list all the names we each like but have vetoed from each other for various reasons so you can get an idea of our taste. There are are a few that we both like but neither of us love and I feel sad about giving her a compromise name that I just don't adore, as does DH. I'm worried I'll regret it. Hoping you can give me some ideas we haven't thought of.... or persuade me that one of the names is just the ticket

So, names I love are:

Rosa - DS is Ruben, is it weird to have them starting with same letter?
Stella - DH hates
Meg - sounds ridiculous with surname
Bay - well, he agrees with most of the Mners on that one!
Hebe - DH thinks it's weird

DH loves:

Eva - too popular IMO, or at least going that way
Nadia - I don't like that you don't know whether to say Na-dia or Naaaahhh-dia
Bella - One already in my family

We both quite like:

Carla
Julia
Layla (sometimes it makes me think Persian princess, othertimes I think its a bit dated and chavvy)

Other criteria, it has to sound okay with Ruben and surname starts with M and rhymes with Kapookee! So no names ending with ie sound, Rosie, Lily etc.And def not Mary!

Sorry for such long post. I eagerly await your verdict!

Rosa is lovely, also like Rosanna.

If you like Layla, how about Lila? Oooh, or Delilah - love this name!

Really like Bella, what about Isabella.

I'm not keen on Carla or Julia. Both a bit dated for me. What about Claudia? And I like Juliet.

Hope you come up with something. I wouldn't worry too much. DD wasn't named for a bout 3 days after she was born.

ChippyMinton · 13/03/2010 08:18

Niamh/Neave
Faith
Harriet
Rebecca

Of your list, I like Julia.

Skegness · 13/03/2010 08:29

I love Rosa (was only other serious contender for us for my 7 month old) and Julia (my daughter's middle name).

notsoteenagemum · 13/03/2010 08:47

Rosa, lovely pretty name sounds fine with Ruben.
Stella, is ok but just makes me think Artois.
Meg, is great I really love this name also Megan.
Bay, think it sounds quite nice but as a nn, and Bay is my favourite herb.
Hebe, don't like at all sorry.

Eva, It is pretty but although I don't actually know any but seem to hear it a lot on MN.
Nadia, I'm not keen on this but couldn't tell you why.
Bella, prefer Isabella.

Carla, think this is brassy and harsh sounding.
Julia, I love this name and love Jools/ Jules for a nn.
Layla, I quite like this.

twosofar · 13/03/2010 08:50

I think Rosa is the best of those names and Ruben and Rosa sound sweet together.

I really do like Hebe but I think th problem is people mishearing it for Phoebe, which will drive you bananas

cece · 13/03/2010 08:52

Stop talking about names, keep your shortlist in mind, when your DD is born choose one that suits her. Simple.

TBH we have used none of the names we decided on prior to birth as they never seemed to suit our DC once they were born! Always gone for something further down the shortlist! LOL

Fourleaf · 13/03/2010 09:22

I agree it's good to keep a fairly open mind before the babe is born- I had a couple of really strong contenders that just flew out the window when I saw DS! But also good to have shortlist. Have you thought of... Iona, Cora, May, Norah, Naomi, Orla, Juliet? I think Rosa and Stella are lovely... Julia nice too but make sure you like nn Jules! Good luck and congrats

loobylu3 · 13/03/2010 10:09

I like Rosa, Stella and Julia (the latter is beautiful). Prefer Eve (love Eve) to Eva but both are a little popular.
Good luck deciding!

yama · 13/03/2010 10:13

What about Carly?

PorphyrophillicPixie · 13/03/2010 10:33

Rosa is nice (maybe Rosanna to put in Anna too?), what about Megan for Meg to make it easier on the surname? Nadia is nice as is Bella, maybe an Isabelle/a or something to differ it from the other one?

The names you both like are nice, but Layla is an Arabic name rather than Persian, Leily/Layly and Laleh are both Persian meaning Noctural and Tulip respectively. Both are on my hotlist Also Lila and Lily

hocuspontas · 13/03/2010 10:37

Julia is lovely - am jealous I'm not having any more!

Rosa - great

Rosa Julia?

Agree - when you see her it will become clearer!

SE13Mummy · 13/03/2010 16:29

I think Rosa sounds fine with Ruben but if you're planning to have more children you might then be stressed by having to find another R name that you like. Stella and Eva are lovely too.

How about Eve or Ava if you're worried that Eva is too popular? Or, as you seem quite keen on names with 'l' in them; Lydia or Rachel? Sticking with the Biblical theme what about Hannah, Naomi, Bethany, Tabitha/Talitha, Leah, Judith, Madeleine or Keziah?

I teach a 7-year-old Hebe and have never heard any mention of the 'heebie jeebies'. Children will play with the sounds of any name e.g. Julia Poolia, Alice Balice, Harriet Chariot.

RedbinDippers · 13/03/2010 16:34

Have you considered Katie-Jordan it is well my recent favorite.

MinnieMalone · 13/03/2010 18:53

Rosa, Stella and Bella are all gorgeous, classic and not too too popular. Could you persuade DH on the merits of any of these?

Julia is very pretty, too. Juliet?

HelenDoula · 13/03/2010 23:58

You mentioned Bella ..... how about Belle?

tostaky · 15/03/2010 10:26

what about:
Rose
Carle
Leela

all4fun · 15/03/2010 15:57

Lucia ?
Tia ?

RubiMama · 16/03/2010 18:39

Hello everyone. I feel bad for disappearing for days after starting the thread . DH took laptop away on a trip and I had no access.
Thanks for all your suggestions, all well within the mark!

Lila and variations of, love this. DH doesn't.
Belle as opposed to Bella, love this too, in fact prefer it to Bella, but DH won't go there.
Same goes for Juliet, I like the way it 'Ruben and Juliet' sounds like 'Romeo and Juliet'! but again, DH...blah blah blah
I do really like Isabella but worried she'll sound like a variation on a theme of all the Isobel/Isabelle's being born atm.

I think I'm gunning for Rosa now..........and I've had so many of my faves turned down I feel DH has to give a little. I like Roseanna alot, but does makes me think Roseanne Barr so not entirely sure about this)

Thanks again. I feel less perplexed and focussed on name now and more able to get excited about arrival of precious little babe. Well done MN. Result!

No problem with having R and R in the family.

How about Anya?

How about Yvette?

It is prounounced is pronounced ee-VET. It is of French origin, its meaning is "yew" and it is the feminine form of Yves. I just thought it sounded a bit like Eva.

Congratulations and good luck.

delphinedownunder · 19/03/2010 02:54

Rosa is lovely. What about Clover or Anneke or Lena?

RubiMama · 29/03/2010 21:29

I love Anya and Lena, but DS has two little friends with those names annoying!

Lora69 · 30/03/2010 01:00
