Why do I spend so much time on baby name threads when my oldest is 6yrs??

and I'm not having any more.

I seem to have a weird obsession with baby names. My mother also. Dh groans with dread when we start discussing names for no apparent reason (no babies to name) But then Dh couldn't bear to discuss names even when I was pg it bores him to tears. Apparently.

Is this a common obsession? Why do you think it interests us so much?

I have always been weirdly obsessed with names... actually had a baby names book as a 12 year old because I was so interested in etymology (sp?), cultural variations, etc. I dragged it out when I was pg with dd and dh just thought I was the biggest freak when he found out how long I'd had it!

The power to name things was an exceptional gift to Adam... the power of a name is immense....what if Charles Darwin had been called Curlicue Ramsbottom, would we be discussing Ramsbottomism? Does a rose by any other name really smell that sweet, because if roses were called Cuckoo Shitpots we probably wouldn't have had gardeners carefully working on increasing their scent for hundreds of years... i suppose names have huge import in every country but in this country they imply all sorts of things they really shouldn't in a modern society... they are endlessly fascinating. A novelist would never have two rivals for Prime Minister called Brown and Blair, they would be called, ooo, Kane and Abel or something that doesn't start with the same letter. And somebody somewhere earned an enormous bonus for thinking up Accenture when the name Andersens became too poisoned for polite society. I think it's a very reasonable obsession.

As I have said on another thread this morning, I see it as my bit of community service.

I also feel ridiculously protective when I see my own dc's names mentioned. Their names are uncommon but they do pop up once in a while on here.

I hate it if anyone likes them enough to want to use them (because obviously I own them) and I feel annoyed if anyone dislikes them. Crazy! I need to get out more

I thought I would be able to give up once my baby was born and named.

I think what annoyed me the most was after DD3 was born I couldn't think of a name I wanted to use at all, I think more due to circumstances than anything else, and then a few months later I saw a name and instantly fell in love with it. Never mind, maybe next time

My fave threads are baby names ones and my dd is 14, and I am not having any more.

I love living vicariously through people and imagining what fantasy names I would use.

I think I just like commenting on names in an abstract way. I don't analyse the names of actual babies in real life, but here on a board where you're invited to give your opinion, it's like a free passtime! The children I know in real life, I don't think about their names. But if somebody starts a thread 'what do you think of the name belinda?' then I find I do have an opinion...
