Who is Liberty?

My husband and I are finally getting serious about choosing a name... I'm 39 weeks tomorrow so time could be running out!

A top runner is Liberty... and Libby for short. But, I'm not sure what this name evokes. Could you let me know what the name conjures up for you and what kind of girl someone called Liberty is?

The other names on the shortlist are: Rosa, Lorna, and Alice.

There was a girl called Liberty in dd1's class a long time ago - MIL commented on it and said it sounded like a horse's name to her!! Sorry. I think it's ok, but prefer Lorna or Rosa.

SardineJam · 03/03/2010 13:41

Also Ryan Giggs' - football player - is name this...

Hulababy · 03/03/2010 13:49

One of DD's friend is called Liberty. She is a lovely girl, quite shy and timid, quite clever, polite and hard working. She is very artistic too.

I like Liberty and Alice best.

BitOfFun · 03/03/2010 14:03

Liberty Belle- the magic mushroom. Vair nice: imaginative, free-thinking and a little bit unpredictable...

Lotster · 03/03/2010 14:48

The magic mushroom is Liberty Cap! Not that I know much about that..!

SqueezyB · 03/03/2010 15:14

I think it's bit naff, the kind of name I would have come up with when I was 13. Sorry! Rosa, Lorna and Alice are much nicer, classic and pretty and won't date.

Perhaps

Rosa Liberty
Alice Liberty

Funny, I never even think "hippy" or "arty". It just sounds like the name of a girl from a rather well-to-do family. I think one of the shadow cabinet has a daughter called Liberty; hardly a bohemian background

Lotster · 03/03/2010 18:51

True, the only Liberty's I've met or read about have been very well heeled. Although one was the daughter of a model so still quite boho.

mathanxiety · 03/03/2010 19:40

I knew a couple of African American Libertys. I wouldn't think naff. It's a name that might have a lot of positive associations behind it. I like Rosa and Alice a lot also.

cookielove · 03/03/2010 19:44

I looked after a little girl called liberty and she was lovely, she was always known as libby. I think she had a few issues with food at home if i recall i think none of the food was allowed to touch each other, but at nursery she was just a breeze to look after and so very sweet.

MrFibble · 03/03/2010 19:47

I know a Liberty. She is thin, über cool and ultra stylish. She is the offspring of a dissident and an anarchist. She speaks 4 languages.

And she is nice.

peanutbutterkid · 03/03/2010 19:53

I think it's a lovely name.
But that said, the only Libby (Liberty) I know irl is 10yo, quite fat and not very bright.

Acanthus · 03/03/2010 19:57

Liberty is a brat.

Libby however is a nice middle class girl

liliputlady · 03/03/2010 20:39

Sounds very very posh.
I really like Rosa.

beccagrace2 · 03/03/2010 21:37

my dd1 is liberty alice, she is 8 1/2, and just loves her name! She is tall & slim with very dark curly hair so i think she carries it off well. she is very arty and loves drama. She has just named her new baby sister Claudia...i just hope she looks like her sister then she will suit her name well.

Lotster · 04/03/2010 08:47

Lovely names Becca

Liberty will grow to be willowy and have very light brown, almost mousey hair.
She will not be a victim of fashion and others will secretly admire her style.
She will be intelligent and head strong too.

Italiangreyhound · 07/03/2010 01:26

Liberty is beautiful, strong and confident. I think she's great.

Libby is cute and popular, but does make me think of Libby Purvis (who as a radio star I have not actually seen).

She could be abbreviated to Liv (as in Liv Tyler) or Bertie!

I like the name a lot but most importantly, what do you think of it growingweeble?

growingweeble · 07/03/2010 09:30

I'm finding it really hard to find a name I 'love'. DH is really keen on Liberty but I'm a little unsure... yet unable to come up with alternatives so am not being very helpful.

I quite like Liberty, but am worried that it brings to mind someone who is a bit posh, or American.

Having said that, I'm surprised at myself for worrying so much as I've always thought that names aren't that important and the person carries the name.

My preference at the moment would be something safe like Rosa or Amy. But, my DH feels (and I agree) that would be a bit dull. Oooh I wish I could ask my daughter what she thinks 18 years from now!
