Do you like it?

Or do you think there are now so many little girls called Mia around that a Nia would forever be correcting her name?

rubyslippers · 01/03/2010 16:48

i don't like it

Nina is a top name IMO

ReadingTeaLeaves · 01/03/2010 16:54

I've seen it spelt Nyah (Swahili origin I believe) and considered it quite seriously for DC who ended up being a DS. That spelling might make it more easily distinguished from Mia.

birdofthenorth · 01/03/2010 17:03

The Nia spelling is Welsh (which I'm not... well, not more than an eight!!) but I agree it looks and sounds like Mia.

Nina is lovely but DH has negative associations with a nasty Nina at school!

I have to say I really don't like Nia, not sure why. (I don't particularly like Mia either, come to think of it).

Mum1369 · 01/03/2010 17:13

ooh my friend has a Nia and it really suits her - I think it's lovely !

bronze · 01/03/2010 17:16

I have a Nia so am a little biased (welsh version)

Sunshinemummy · 01/03/2010 17:26

I know a Nia - she's absolutely beautiful but a little bit spoilt. It's quite a nice name though.

bronze · 01/03/2010 17:30

Ruby wouldnt Nyah be said differently?

remaincalm · 01/03/2010 17:38

Not a massive fan of Nia, I like Mia but it has recently become a very popular name.

ReadingTeaLeaves · 01/03/2010 17:50

Nyah is pronounced as it looks: Ny - ah
Mia can by My-ah or Mee-ah. What's the Welsh (proper!) pronunciation of Nia? Sorry if I've offered a name that's pronounced totally differently!

PureAsTheColdDrivenSnow · 01/03/2010 17:52

Nia is pronounced nee-ah.

Lovely name

birdofthenorth · 01/03/2010 18:00

Yes I was thinking Nia pronunced Nee-ah... although DH has just vetoed Nia too!!

He doesn't seem to like ANY names, or to suggest any. Only 16 weeks gone though so fingers crossed the next 5 months bring a moment of mutual revelation!!

Its ok.

vess · 02/03/2010 05:42

I like Nia. Much better than Mia somehow IMO.

ChynaDoll2006 · 02/03/2010 09:10

Nia is Welsh and Swahili. Swahili for determination. Very pretty name.

liliputlady · 02/03/2010 09:15

Could be confused for "not applicable" when written in capitals.

skihorse · 02/03/2010 11:03

Beautiful name - are you Welsh?

TabithaSmith · 02/03/2010 11:05

It's ok. I prefer Mia or Nina.

I think of gorgeous actress Nia Long, which is a plus I suppose
