Oooh I disagree about the old lady names mentioned. Spain is a biiiiiiig country and some of those names bottombunk that you call old lady names are quite popular in Andalucia, Esperanza for example or Angeles or Soledad.

I would say that a few of the names you say are "very popular" in Spain at the moment are not at all popular where I live in the south. I've only ever come across one Leire and she was Basque and never heard of a Veronica down here.

Yes, quite correct pipoca Spain is a big country and it should have ocurred to me to point out that the names could be more/less popular depending on the region, I am in Madrid.

However, I still think the names I mentioned are old-fashioned. Just because a name is popular doesnt mean its not old-fashioned and viceversa

No, I don't like them either. I think soooo mnay people give the girl the mum's name that there aren't very many names at all and they're quite old fashioned....same names repeating over and over.
Someone linked on a thread about Spanish girls names aaages ago to a baby nmae site for the most popular girls names in Venezuela. They were quite different to the typical Spanish names but there were some really pretty ones.

I agree withh pipoca, a lot of those traditional names are still very popular here in southern Spain. I like Jimena/Ximena but it would sound totally crap in English!

Can't for the life of me find the Venezuelan one.

Y'know I've always quite liked Alma because of the meaning but not sure it doesn't sound a bit like Hilda or gertrude in English, plus the whole "mi alma/mi arma" affectionate greeting in Andalucia. Alba is quite nice too I think, although not sure really.I see some forreign ones have sneaked in...Briana??
