Dominie: name of lady at Waitrose checkout

When I was shopping today I noticed that the name of the lady at the till was Dominie. Given that names are very much on my mind, I decided to be nosy and ask her about it.

She said that her father had been in the army and it had been the name of one of the ladies at a posting I think in France.

It struck me as very pretty and, between the two of us, we decided that it must have been a French feminine version of Dominic.

I don't think it will go on our shortlist, but just thought I'd throw it out there to see what others thought!

There is a gorgeous little girl called Dominie at my school. I think I like it because of her.

MrsBadger · 25/02/2010 14:45

surely Dominique is the feminine version of Dominic?

MaryAnnSingleton · 25/02/2010 14:46

My great aunt had a lovely friend called Dominie - an English woman.

MadreInglese · 25/02/2010 14:51

I think it's lovely

MadreInglese · 25/02/2010 14:52

I also love Aurelie

(but it sounds too much like "oh really" for me to use it)

Peaceflower · 25/02/2010 14:52

V appealing

AllieW · 25/02/2010 14:53

@ MrsBadger I've just looked in my names book and it gives both! Perhaps it's just the least usual version.

Oh I LOVE it! that is really a gorgeous name.

What would you have as a short form? Minnie?

JezBaron · 20/07/2010 16:14

Dominique is better :D (I am slightly biased, being a Dominique myself!) It can be shortened to Dom, Mini, Nique, Nicki, Kiki, Domi etc...the opportunities are endless. It means Belonging to God too

PaintingTheFence · 20/07/2010 16:28

I haven't heard of it before but it's nice You might be constantly correcting people who thought it was Dominique, though.

mopsyflopsy · 20/07/2010 16:32

Lovely!

Fimbo · 20/07/2010 16:35

I love when Waitrose tannoy for staff members and use Mr or Mrs instead of the first names.

flopsy1974 · 20/07/2010 21:25

I went to school with a Dominie. Never heard it since. Lovely name.

JebusBuiltMyHotQuads · 22/07/2010 09:58

I love it! Never heard of it before.

valiumSingleton · 22/07/2010 10:20

I like it. Prefer it to Dominique, which is a bit too long for me. I like Eugenie too (similar?). The mw who helped deliver my dc1 was called Eugenie.

Colliecross · 22/07/2010 11:49

There was a very nice Dominie at my school, I thought her name was Domino for ages tho

cyteen · 22/07/2010 11:56

Dominie is sweet, much nicer than Dominique.

Eugenie makes me think of 'eugenics' when I see it written down, so not keen.

Elsa123 · 23/07/2010 10:11

i like it, but is the name of an aircraft my dad used to fly in so I would be laughed at if I used it i think!

I prefer Dominique. Dominie is OK, but is a weaker name than Dominique. I’d worry about domino too.

Orphlids · 25/07/2020 09:06

Love Dominie. Very pretty. I like the unusual Dom sound, which balances out the more feminine ending.

Changedname81 · 25/07/2020 11:06

Never heard it before and really like it Grin

MikeUniformMike · 25/07/2020 14:42

Anno Domini.

GoshHashana · 26/07/2020 10:25

Dominatrix.

milienhaus · 26/07/2020 11:46

It’s a nice name but I do think it’s quite weird to call your child after an ex girlfriend / fling.
