OK here is my DH's list:

Cillian
Remy
Rudy
Bosco

Here is my list:

Noah
Gabriel
Inigo
Sam

Here is a list of names we both (very grudgingly) MIGHT accept:

Malachy
Inaki (should have tilde (squiggle) on the n but don't know how to type it)
Tadgh
Rory/Ruari

DH is Irish btw

Any suggestions or preferences much appreciated - be as brutal as you like!

Rory from the joint list.

I like your list, Gabriel in particular, but not your DH's, although I do know a sweet boy called Remy.

I did at Bosco I'm afraid.

ILoveGregoryHouse · 20/02/2010 16:56

Oh, and good luck with the imminent birth. Insist on naming him after you've given birth - the emotional blackmail potential is amazing - worked for me 3 times!

rubyslippers · 20/02/2010 16:57

Gabriel or Ruari

Bosco - awful

DrSkidaddle · 20/02/2010 17:01

ha ha TOTALLY agree about Bosco - and you should hear some of the other ridiculous things he has suggested (Reef, Mowgli, I could go on and on)

ILGH - have tried the whole post-birth blackmail thing with him twice and it hasn't worked so-far - but I will remain optimistic...

If you call him Inigo he will forever have 'my name is inigo montoya blah blah blah' quoted at him.

Noah too popular.

From your joint list, and as you do have Irish roots, I'd go for Malachi (I thought it was spelled with an 'i' at the end?).

Has Fergus been discounted already?

janeite · 20/02/2010 18:14

Cillian - don't like
Remy - no
Rudy - no
Bosco - awful
Noah -lovely
Gabriel -lovely
Inigo - no but I love The Princess Bride! Westley is a good name, non?
Sam -ok
Malachy -no
Inaki - pardon?
Tadgh - no but love Thaddeus
Rory/Ruari - no

JaynieB · 20/02/2010 18:19

I knew a standard poodle called Bosco...
Rather like Remy - sounds nice said out loud.
Sam and Gabriel are lovely too.
Not Cillian though - but then I have a slight lisp can can't say it properly

mathanxiety · 20/02/2010 20:19

His:
Cillian -- LOVE (but use the K spelling or people will pronounce it Sillian)
Remy -- LOVE
Rudy -- don't like
Bosco -- LIKE a lot (I loved Bosco on Irish tv in the 80s)

Yours:
Noah -- don't like
Gabriel -- LOVE
Inigo -- LIKE
Sam -- LIKE

Joint:
Malachy -- LIKE
Inaki -- NO, this one seems to be out of left field altogether. Is it a version of Ignatius?
Tadgh -- LOVE (Tadhg correct spelling)
Rory/Ruari -- LOVE

anamaria22 · 20/02/2010 21:01

I really like Cillian, Bosco and Remy - all great underused names that sound masculine and elegant.

Don't like Sam, Noah and Rory as they are very common and a bit 'blah' compared to your other suggestions.

liliputlady · 20/02/2010 21:21

Sam and Rory are my faves from your lists.

dizzydixies · 20/02/2010 21:24

Cillian, Gabriel, Rudy or Tadgh for me

5inthebed · 20/02/2010 21:25

Ruari from joint list. Knew one once, and was a lovely bloke

Noah from yours, Cillian from DH

5inthebed · 20/02/2010 21:27

Actually, how will you be pronouncing Ruari? AFIAK, it is pronounced Roo-Vay

dizzydixies · 20/02/2010 21:30

5inthebed - the scottish and I think Irish pn is Roo-Ray as opposed to Rory which is more roar-ray iyswim?

Heated · 20/02/2010 21:39

Much prefer your list

Cillian - no to any name that has Kill in it
Remy - Remy Martin, therefore no
Rudy - shortened to Rude, so no
Bosco - horrible
Noah - very nice
Gabriel - lovely
Inigo - could be persuaded
Sam - very nice
Malachy - ok
Inaki - no
Tadgh - pn?
Rory/Ruari - ok

dizzydixies · 20/02/2010 21:41

oh I missed Noah, sorry, I love Noah too

Heated Tadgh is pn similar to Tagged but not really - its very difficult to explain - you should pop over and listen to Frank McCourt on the Irish baby names website where he sounds them all out

franke · 20/02/2010 21:42

Remy, Noah, Ruary

IlooklikeGrotbagstoday · 20/02/2010 21:44

I'm suprised Bosco is on your DH's list if he is Irish. Bosco was a puppet clown on Irish kid's tv about 20 years ago.

cece · 20/02/2010 21:48

Cillian - no!
Remy - I know one and it is OK
Rudy - bit American sounding
Bosco - terrible

Noah - not one I like and it is very popular
Gabriel - only for a xmas baby I think
Inigo - no
Sam - like this one!

Malachy - like but would spell with an i at the end
Inaki - not sure how to say this so I would say no...
Tadgh - ditto
Rory/Ruari - think this is my favourite from your lists

IlooklikeGrotbagstoday · 20/02/2010 21:50

Bosco

5inthebed · 20/02/2010 21:50

The Ruari I know was pronounced as I said, he was from one of the islands off Scotland, I forget now.

pointysayhiphip · 20/02/2010 22:06

Sam
Rory/Ruari

I have never heard of Ruari pronounced as Roo-vay. In gaelic I believe the letters 'mh' are pronounced as 'v', never the letter 'r'. As in Mhairi (Vari)

glasgowlass · 20/02/2010 22:22

Cillian - really dont like, kids can be cruel and I fear he would be nicknamed Gillian!

Remy - No, reminds me of remy martin brandy

Rudy - would end up being called Ruby

Bosco - Sounds like a really bad football mascot name

Noah - Lovely name, know a few, all really charming wee boys

Gabriel - No, not one I like.

Inigo - No, not good!

Sam - Love it but then again my wee boy is called Sam

Malachy - Really like this mane but would use an I at the end not a Y

Inaki - Please dont!

Tadgh - Seriously would never consider this! It sounds like scottish slang for a dickhead

Rory/Ruari - Love these, bothspellings and pronunciations, slightly favour Ruari for a boy as I have a cat named Rory.

dizzydixies · 20/02/2010 22:27

glasgowlass - Tadgh isn't pn tadge though, its more like Tag-d

I wish I could explain it better but as a Glasgow lass and know the slang you mean it doesn't sound anything like it

glasgowlass · 20/02/2010 22:32

lol i didnt think it was pronounced that way but to see it written down like that screams out that certain slang term for me. Silly I know...
