Alexa, Elle or Lily?

Which do you like best?

Do you think Alexa would automatically be shortened to Alex or other names such as Al, Lex, Lexi?
I don't mind Alex as the nn for a girl, what do you think?

Would she always be correcting people if I chose Alexa? ie: people calling her Alexia, Alexis?

Any personal experience out there?

Alexa....she can be a right clomp about at ballet but still girly and it's a lovely grownup name. Ella and Lily are not.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 10/02/2010 12:59

Livia is also on the list.

What do we think of that? Will people always be assuming her name is Olivia?
Lovia is actually a name on it's own but s used as a NN for Olivia too.

I have an Alexa and no-one shortens it.

Tis cool

TeflonMum · 10/02/2010 14:57

Lily. There is a reason it's so popular.

mathanxiety · 10/02/2010 17:01

Livia is a beautiful name. I don't think everyone will assume it's Olivia.

I like Elle, then Lily, then Alexa, but I think Livia is the best so far. It has better 'grown-up name' potential than the others, unless you used Elizabeth with Elle as a nn.

indialily1 · 10/02/2010 17:31

I like lily the best, but that is my daughters middle name!!

DorotheaPlenticlew · 10/02/2010 17:37

Alexa, of the original three. Lily is OK; bit too widespread just now for my taste otherwise I'd like it a lot more.

Elle, I just associate with a fairly crap magazine, and those weird branded items you sometimes see saying "Elle" all over them whcih I am not sure are magazine-linked or a separate brand, but either way, ugh.

Livia is good.

Marne · 10/02/2010 17:40

Alexa, also like Lily but it's my dogs name .

LadyOfTheFlowers · 10/02/2010 22:48

Livia is pretty good actually, I agree.

Any middle name suggestions?

Lily.

Your child will likely never know who Amanda Holden was, you are never going to be friends with her, so why would it bother you if your children have the same name? You could call your daughter Tyrannosaurus Rex and Ms Holden could have another child next year and call it the same, it bears no relevance to you.

You cannot control nicknames once they are at school, be it Lexie, or any permutation of any name you choose, her friends will call her all sorts.

Choose the name that you love and be done with it! Alexa is nice, I think, punchy but feminine without being frilly.

We have a Lila and a Lily (Lilian) in the family, both are cool IMO, and I think Lily can be carried off by a tomboy without problem (she might call herself Lil(s) though). Livia makes me think of the wicked wife of Emperor Augustine (think I Claudius) but I don't see that as a problem. It's probably the most unusual of your ideas, and that's good IMO. I think I prefer Alexia or Alexis to Alexa - the Alexia I grew up with was called Leckie as a child (although not any more). I have a friend with a little girl called Nina, and like that lots too.

I don't like Elle.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 12/02/2010 09:43

Argh! I didn't see the evil bit about Livia! I doesn't matter though I guess as not many people will know that.
With Livia I was mainly worried about people assuming her name was Olivia and Livia was her NN but others have said they don't think that would be the case.

I like Lily, Lil, Lils whatever, all of those.

The more I think about it, think I am going off Elle a bit - just thinking it's a bit 'meh'.

I like the sound of Livia and think Livi as a NN suits a little dot and Livia/Liv I can imagine for an older girl and woman.

I agree -- I think it's a name that can last a lifetime.

PestoSnowMonster · 12/02/2010 14:58

.....but not as nice as Alexa of course

AllieW · 12/02/2010 17:03

Of the original three I prefer Lily, but as a nickname for Lilith (which is also sufficiently unusual that there will be very few others).

Livia is also nice. For some reason it is grouped in my head with Ophelia, which I think very pretty.

KAMum · 13/02/2010 15:56

Alexa - it's a lovely name and more unusual. Although I prefer Alexia, which is my DD's name. I liked Alex, but thought everyone would assume she was a boy so needed a more feminine name which we could shorten to Alex. After she was born I liked Alexia so much it doesn't get shortened.
