Would appreciate honest opinons on each of these names please.
Would pronounce Lucian/Lucius Loo-see-us and Loo-see-us, have no connection to countries they are more commonly use. Would be afraid too that they are trendy as Lucas and Luca.

Lucian
Hubert
Lucius
Ephraim
Timothy
Rufus
Laurence
Florian (not sure if this is too much, probably)

Augusta
Penelope
Henrietta
Floriana
Enid

Rufus and Laurence are lovely as are Penelope and Henrietta.

Prefer Lucius to Lucian though not sure why.
Really don't like the other boys names at all[polite emoticon].

I only like Augusta if dd is born in August.

Enid is too old lady, prefer Edith.

Floriana is bloody awful imo.

miladybess · 07/02/2010 23:49

No, Augusta will have no connection with the month.

Not keen on any of them except perhaps Augusta (possible middle name) if born in August. They all sound like you're trying too hard and I don't like the inevitable nns of Timmy, Penny, Hen, Flo, Laurie and Hughie.

None are my style.

Floriana btw is very "Hilda/Doris/Janet" in Italy ...ie just old lady, not chic.

shoobidoo · 08/02/2010 09:38

I love Lucian and Florian. Florian is very popular in Germany at the moment.

For girls, I like Penelope and Augusta very much.

Ziggurat · 08/02/2010 09:46

Lucian - OK
Hubert - agree with helenwombat - Wlliam's nemesis. Pasty, flabby tattle-tale of a boy.
Lucius - OK
Ephraim - No. Just don't do it.
Timothy - such a wet, wet, name
Rufus - OK, bit of a dog's name
Laurence - Llewelyn-Bowen. Nuff said.
Florian (not sure if this is too much, probably) - this isn't as bad as some of the others on the list

Augusta - too similar to Augustus Gloop, the fat boy in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Penelope - a bit matronly
Henrietta - OK
Floriana - doesn't do it for me
Enid - old lady

None of these names would be anywhere near my list - there are so many lovely names out there, that these just wouldn't even register.

As such, I'm probably not the best person to comment, although obviously have not let this stop me.

RockbirdandHerSpork · 08/02/2010 09:50

Lucian - gorgeous although would probably spell it Lucien for some reason
Hubert - naaah not keen
Lucius - prefer Lucian
Ephraim - Maybe/maybe not, need to think
Timothy - DH's name but not my cup of tea
Rufus - no
Laurence - not keen
Florian (not sure if this is too much, probably) - waaaaaay too much!

Augusta - ok
Penelope - really like
Henrietta - similar to DD's name but not adverse to this
Floriana - Noooooooooooooooooo
Enid - eeeeeeeeeeeeeek!

I don't like any of them. They all sound too aspirational - trying too hard.

Sorry!

MaggieTaSeFuar · 08/02/2010 10:09

i really like Penelope. Augusta is kind heavy for a girl. Henrietta is a prettier sound but it's still a bit weighty or something. Floriana is too saccharine and made up sounding! from one extreme to the other!! Enid - bleugh

What about Adelaide? It has the solidity of Augusta but it's easier to 'deliver' lol.

Florian is too feminine and too posh! but Julian is really nice imo. Also, Julius might be to your taste. I like it, but it would be too much for my son!

Lucius reminds is of lush or lucifer. jsut not keen. ephraim reminds me of phlegm.
Rufus is nice!
Laurence is nice, and nn Laurie is cute
Timothy I actually like, I know it's not so fashionable right this second, but it's a good classic name.

Wolfblass · 08/02/2010 10:13

Lucian - Devil
Hubert - Nope
Lucius - Nope
Ephraim - Nope
Timothy - Ok
Rufus - OK
Laurence - No
Florian (not sure if this is too much, probably)- No

Augusta - No
Penelope - Ok
Henrietta - Ok (but i have a hen, henrietta)
Floriana - No
Enid - No

Not my cup of tea I'm afraid. Don't like any of the boys' names.

Like Henrietta and Enid from girls' list.

Doozie · 08/02/2010 11:46

Lucian - ok, if it goes well with your surname.
Hubert - ok, prefer Hugo, Hugh, Hector.
Lucius - Lucian is better.
Ephraim - I'm very familiar with this name as it is a family name (are we related Mrs Woolf?) so am bias towards it - but better as a middle name.
Timothy - Tim nice but dim
Rufus - Sweet, fun.
Laurence - Love the nn. Laurie
Florian (not sure if this is too much, probably) - You're right, it is too much.

Augusta - Good, but only if the baby is due in August. I know a gorgeous little girl called Augustine and it really suits her.
Penelope - ok, due a come back.
Henrietta - ok, prefer Frederique or Frederica.
Floriana - No - too much. Fleur, Florence, Flora, Fabienne, Felicity, Francesca maybe.
Enid - Horrid. Sorry.

bellissima · 08/02/2010 11:52

Like Rufus. Quite like Timothy. Hubert somehow reminds me of Dilbert.

Like Penelope, but you have to like nn Penny. prefer Harriet to Henrietta.

miladybess · 10/02/2010 14:43

Thank you for your comments. We're thinking of adding Lucius to the mix too now.

Florian..............

TeflonMum · 10/02/2010 14:51

Love Penelope. Dislike all the others.

Don't call your son Florian.

miladybess · 10/02/2010 14:55

We did suspect Flroan was just a bit too much. Now that our suspicions have been confirmed, it has gone. Lucian scratched off too!

OP posts:
miladybess · 10/02/2010 15:07

"Florian has gone" - I don't know what went wrong with my typing.

Lucian -- nice, but maybe a bit too like Lucy?
Hubert -- ok
Lucius -- no, too like Lucy and also Lucifer
Ephraim -- reminds me of 'diaphragm'
Timothy -- love
Rufus -- love
Laurence -- no
Florian -- like, but nn possibilities lend themselves to the effeminate

Augusta -- no, a bit masculine for a girl imo
Penelope -- love
Henrietta -- like
Floriana -- like
Enid -- no, very clunky name, imo

May I suggest Fabian instead of Florian?
