Too pretentious, too girly??

Eben could be short for Esteban. Sorry if that's already been said. That could work. Eden very girly imo.

Etienne is nice but I would feel silly using it. Are you French, half French, flying over France on your way to Germany, something like that!!

ilovesprouts · 04/02/2010 08:34

eden imo is a girls name !!

Adair · 04/02/2010 08:41

My second(?) cousin is Eden. He's about 9 I think. Lovely name.
Love Emil but our surname sounds French and we are not, so dh vetoed any too-French names

Etienne looks like a girl's name to me because of the nne at the end.

But my ds will likely be a boy Sky in a class of girl Skyes so who am I to judge? (and no, I don't care if that makes him gay

mixedmamameansbusiness · 04/02/2010 15:21

Etienne is beautiful. I dont really like Eden.

MrsDimples · 04/02/2010 22:41

I know a male Eden & who cares if Etienne sounds pretentious, if you like it.

joanne34 · 05/02/2010 13:21

Etienne is one of our favs, for DS2, although his dad is half french and has double barrelled french surname... I think it's a lovely name.

Eden to me sounds like a girls name....

WrigglyGiggly · 05/02/2010 13:40

I'm quite surprised by all these female Edens. I've only ever met male ones. In my mind it is in the same boat as all the other '...den' names: Hayden, Jayden etc.

I know an English Etienne. Doesn't raise eyebrows for me.

But personally if I was looking for an E name I would probably choose Elliot.

Wolfblass · 05/02/2010 13:43

Emerson
Elijah
Emmanuel (but again to french if not french)
Euan
Elwood

Paolosgirl · 05/02/2010 13:44

Eden is a girly name, and Etienne is poncetastic, unless you happen to be french or of french descent.

joanne34 · 05/02/2010 13:51

Elliot is lovely too.... I like Elliot for a girl too... like on Scrubs.

keresley · 05/02/2010 13:51

In was going to call my ds Etienne - I really love it. We settled on Fabian in the end (and no I'm not French).

KnottyLocks · 05/02/2010 13:54

Elias?

Paolosgirl · 05/02/2010 13:56

Fabian is of Latin origin though - it's Fabien that's French.

momofnearly2 · 05/02/2010 19:52

I know 2 male Eden's. 1 is in his 30's and 1 is 3yrs old. I think of it as a boy's name. If you like it then use it although I do prefer Eben!

Ziggurat · 05/02/2010 20:06

"It works. Strong name."

Eden is many things, possibly even nice. But it is not strong.

tostaky · 05/02/2010 21:37

I like Etienne and i dont understand why it is pretentious... but maybe thats because im french?
Enzo is nice too
Not too keen on Eden though

EmilyStrange · 05/02/2010 21:43

"naff to be original", let's all be sheep then

I know quite a few male Edens, I think of it as more male than female but I hear it pronounced with a soft E rather than a hard E (as in garden of....).

MilkNoSugarPlease · 07/02/2010 00:54

LOVE the name Eden for boy or girl

and really like Etienne

Knew an Etienne from when he was born (name SO SO didnt suit him!) until he was 3 (had completly 100% grown into the name! SO suited him!)

totally unhelpful i know!

Tortington · 07/02/2010 00:57

pregnant women should not be allowed to choose names.

in fact there should be a law against naming a child until 2 weeks after the birth.

etienne? dude, seriously!

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 07/02/2010 12:54

I know a male Eden. I quite like it but it is a bit airy fairy.

Etienne is toooo french (unless you are actually french)

janeite · 07/02/2010 12:58

No to both.

Why on earth does it have to begin with E? V strange!

Ellis is good / Elias is lovely / Emil is ok / Ernest is okay but Ernie is hideous / Elijah is okay but I don't like Eli / Elliot is getting popular but it does nothing for me.

Flightattendant · 07/02/2010 13:02

I like the name Eden for either gender.

I know of a small, English female Etienne and a large, French male Etienne. It is a bit French for a bloke really.

It's a lovely name though.

PuppyMonkey · 07/02/2010 13:04

Ethan is better for a boy than Eden. Eden makes me think of a pre-Raphaellite woman floating around with long wavy red hair and a white dress. Not good image for a boy.

Etienne makes me think of that crap 90s band with the wimpy woman singer.

Today seems to be a good day for poncey names in MN land.

cece · 07/02/2010 13:08

Eden too girly

Ettiene only really works if you are French imo.

How about;

Eric
Edgar
Edward
Eduord
Edmund
Earl
Ellery
Emlyn
Ernie
Errol
Eugene
Ezra

No t that I like all of the above names, just some I found on a website of boys names!

janeite · 07/02/2010 13:12

Oh of course - Edward/Edmund are far and away the best E names: how on earth did I forget them? I liked St Etienne though!
