If you are in Scotland they are fine although i thought Innes was a girls' name

i haven;t heard of Muir

suwoo · 27/01/2010 21:22

Erm, very scottish. They sound like words, not names IYSWIM (probably not ).

I like Fergus best.

Bleatblurt · 27/01/2010 21:23

My DH is a Lyle. He hated it growing up.

controlfreakery · 27/01/2010 21:25

fergus (or angus?).... gus for short.

BridesheadRegardless · 27/01/2010 21:28

Fergus is great.

the others are a bit too scottish for me, I haven't really herad of them. but if you live in Scotland and I'm just ignorant please ignore me.

i don't dislike them, they just make me go 'what was that?'

PurpleEglu · 27/01/2010 21:28

I like Innes and Muir. Don't like Laird at all others are meh!

thisisyesterday · 27/01/2010 21:31

i like Innes and Fergus

fruitstick · 27/01/2010 21:32

Like Fergus but not the others. Lyle reminds me of Lyle Lovett and noone wants that!

I think Innes is a girl's name too (had a spanish friend whose DD was called this)

avaj · 27/01/2010 21:39

In Spain Innes is a girls name, but in Scotland it is def a boys name.
Thanks for your feedback! I like Muir and Fergus best, but my surname begins with an S, so it might be a bit tricky with Fergus. A bit of a mouthfull?

I bloody love Fergus. I would name a son of mine Fergus. It's a good strong name.

Tillyscoutsmum · 27/01/2010 21:45

My ds is Fergus, so I am biased. I think that's the only one I like on your list though. Sorry

differentID · 27/01/2010 21:47

If the S at the end of Fergus is clashing a bit with your surname, how about Fergal as an alternative?

CurlyCasper · 27/01/2010 21:48

Love Innes, but DH doesn't think it will work living Down South (fine at home in Scotland). I think the Spanish girl's name is often Inez. Quite like Fergus too.

Laird - I relate too much to the Lord of the land. Would be like calling him Lord or Chieftan.

On a similar route, Logan is a good strong Scottish boy's name.

avaj · 27/01/2010 22:07

Mmm I know what you mean about Laird, Curly, it probably does sound a bit pompus.
Logan is nice, but I know a couple nearby.
I would like a short, strong name. I think that would go best with my DS and DD.

Innes and Fergus

what about
Murray
Fraser
Nairn
Rory
Logan was about 6th most popular name last year
Harris
Lewis
Craig
Lachlan
Struan
Stewart
Andrew

pointydug · 27/01/2010 22:23

Muir - surname
Lyle - surname
Laird - not-necessarily-benevolent landowner, not on your nelly
Innes - surname
Fergus - ok

CantSleepWontSleep · 27/01/2010 23:40

fergus is the only one I like.
How about Kester or duncan or hamish?

avaj · 28/01/2010 10:06

I like Hamish!
I like surnames as first names, and if you think about it practically all Scotish boys names are surnames as well as first names, ie
Scott
Craig
Andrew
Stuart
Murray
Duncan
Donald
Etc etc..................

Good for you choosing something different. That's what I say! Far too many boring names around IMHO!
