Help! Our favourite boys' name has just been 'stolen', we need a new one!

I'm 24 weeks pregnant, don't know if it's a boy or girl but we have loads of girl names we like...and NO boy names.

We finally settled on Jude about 3 weeks ago and have both grown to love it, now some friends just named their baby boy Jude yesterday I'm devastated- we didn't know any before that. I know we could still use it but we feel it's just too close and we have soooo many mutual friends it would just be too weird. So gutted about it.

Before coming up with Jude I just couldn't get excited about the idea of having a boy, now I'm back to that again...our potential ds needs a name otherwise I fear I might be disappointed if it's not a girl

The only other name we both like is John but it seems boring now. I love Benedict & Theodore but dh doesn't, and Ralph but it doesn't go with our surname...HELP!

We want something strong, not too common but not too 'out there'...anyone?

Vincent, Vincent, Vincent. I won't be having a 3rd so please someone use my favourite boy's name.

SqueezyB · 27/01/2010 13:22

Oh no, I'd be gutted too And Jude is a lovely name.

Some suggestions...

Dylan
Luke/Lucas
Nathaniel
Jacob
George
Benjamin
James
Edward
Reuben

I don't think John is boring, especially if you both like it. And Johnny is really cute. He'd probably be the only John in a class full of Archies and Charlies!

GooseyLoosey · 27/01/2010 13:24

Rafe?

Jude is the patron saint of lost causes, so you could see not being able to use the name as having a bright side (if you wanted to).

ShowOfHands · 27/01/2010 13:28

Jude's going to get popular. Keep telling yourself that. It's just slipping into the top 100 boys names. I know 3 baby Judes, 2 boys and 1 girl.

Friend who has just had a Jude also has a Reuben and a Gilbert (Bertie).

I like...

Seth
Arlo
Ivo
Barnaby
Inigo
Django

Hi cupcake

That's just downright annoying and Jude is a lovely name.

I'm impressed my DSs name has already come up as a suggestion, but then there was a whole thread about it the other day . Which just goes to show theres no such thing as an unusual name.

Anyway, we did consider John - it is pretty rare these days. I also liked Dominic, Arthur, Reuben, Evan, Eden/Aden, Aron

angelene · 27/01/2010 13:53

Evan
Joseph
Patrick
Another vote for Luke

But I like John as well and as others have said it's pretty rare for children now.

gladders · 27/01/2010 13:53

Seth?

Jago?

Jonah/Jonas?

Noah?

But John is a great name - i know of 2 johns under 5 and they're both great kids - can also shorten to johnny when they're little?

Jamieandhismagictorch · 27/01/2010 14:00

Another vote for Evan, and John (Evan is a Welsh variant of John, fact fans !)

Also:

Elijah/Eli
Joel

Karrierbag · 27/01/2010 14:02

Jacob and Joshua - love love love them!!

xx

flimflammum · 27/01/2010 14:04

I'll let you use my favourite boy's name, vetoed by DH - Jed.

There you go.

Jethro
Edmund
Gabriel

PanicMode · 27/01/2010 14:06

Poor you - that happened when my DD arrived - my best friend named her DD Harriet just before mine arrived and she's DS1's godmother, so we see them all the time and I couldn't use it (it was total coincidence as we hadn't told her what we were thinking).

I have a Theo(dore), and a Rufus and we had considered Ralph (pron. Rafe) for number 4. I adore Benedict, but DH thinks it would be shortened to Ben which he says is too boring.

Have a look on my "help name DC4 thread" (I don't know how to link to it - sorry) as there were some great suggestions on there - even though we still haven't managed to agree on one.

everylittlebeat · 27/01/2010 14:07

John's good - and pretty unusual these days.

snurgy · 27/01/2010 14:10

I know quite a few Judes. Their brothers are Oscar, Finlay, Luca, Joshua and Sonny.

Any good?

Cicatrice · 27/01/2010 14:12

John is a good name. No trouble with spelling either!

Iain is gaelic for John if you wanted to take that route.

Ivan

Justin

Washersaurus · 27/01/2010 14:18

I've always liked the name Brock, but in a random twist of fate, DH now has a friend with the same name so I can never use it...well, not without seeming a bit weird anyway.
