Hi Ladies, I have a boys name picked - just stuck on the girls.I like Amelie - with the nn Milly. I have doubts as my close friends name is Emily. I think Amelie might be just too close to Emily. I do like Amelia too but I was just wondering if you know any other varitions of that name that would work?

My sons name is Finlay (mostly gets called Finn). I like Finn and Milly together HOWEVER our dogs name is Maisy! do you think Milly and Maisy are too similar especially when one is the dog! (We got the dog before we had kids and I now wish I had called her a proper doggy name rather than one I just happened to like!)

Any help is appreciated! and all suggestions will be considered!

Just to add the other names I've been thinking of
Ruby
Amber
Edith (Edie)
Cara

with the middle and surname name ...Kitty Whelan

Personally, I find all Amelie/Emily/Milly/ type names a little common/popular for my liking. There are just so many around!

I do love Edith (Edie) and Ruby very much!

LittleDonkin · 25/01/2010 10:58

How about Aurelia if you like the lia on the end?

midnightexpress · 25/01/2010 11:02

Someone I know has just named her DD Amaia. It's Basque, apparently and means 'the end'. She is number 5 in a set of 5 .

I loathe Amelie. (and Emily) (like Emma though)

Amelia is nice enough without messing it about into Amelie to be "different".

Prefer Cara from your list tbh.

ChippingIn · 25/01/2010 11:07

I like Amelie, although depending on your regional accent she may spend most of her life correcting people (from Emily). It is close to your friends name, but I guess if you are going to call her Milly, then that doesn't really matter.

Have you considered just calling her Milly??

I also like Ruby or Cara, but not the others - esp not Edith - too old fashioned for me, but the old names are making a come back!

mopsyflopsy · 25/01/2010 12:10

Not keen on Amelia/Emily/Amelie type names, but I like Edie and Cara.

diddl · 25/01/2010 14:05

Like Amelie & Cara.

beccagrace2 · 25/01/2010 14:30

Edith kitty whelan is my fav from your list

merrymonsters · 25/01/2010 15:02

Emily, Amelie, Amelia etc are pretty names, but they're too popular at the moment. I'd probably avoid them for that reason.

flabbyapronbelly · 25/01/2010 16:21

i know someone who made a spelling mistake and announced dd name as ameila on facebook. actually think its a great name!

fabricfox · 25/01/2010 17:49

As an Amelia and can talk from personal experience, having a dog called maisy isn't really a problem.
Having always been known as Milly we too had a dog as a child but ours was called Minnie.
So it really wont damamge your child just cause confusion sometimes!

Barbarellas · 25/01/2010 18:36

Edith Kitty Whelan with the nickname Edie is STUNNING and in a different league to the other names!

Amelia and Emily are very nice too but Edith is WOW.

What is your choice for a boy? I love Finn/Finlay btw.

SpottyMaldoon · 25/01/2010 18:43

Agree that Edith/ Edie is by far the best IMHO. millions of amelies and amelias around at the mo...

Barbarellas · 25/01/2010 18:53

PS Don't even go there with Amelie, it's the Julie of this generation.

mathanxiety · 25/01/2010 23:36

Edith works best with Kitty as a mn, but all I could think of is why not Kitty Amelia Whelan? I think Kitty is the nicest of the lot, and it sounds great with Whelan.

Bucharest · 26/01/2010 08:03

I don't even think it's the Julie of this generation Barbarella....I think it's more likely to be a bit of a Sharon.

I've decided I like Edie as well! (also love Kitty, any reason why that has to be a mn?)

bellissima · 26/01/2010 08:57

Agree that Amelie = 'the Kylie of the noughties'.

Cara is nice. But Cara Kitty doesn't really go, particularly as Kitty a nn for Katherine. I would go with Cara Edie, or Katherine Edie nn Kitty.

BigusBumus · 26/01/2010 09:07

Kitty is my fave girls name, along with Flora.

Why have i got 3 sons...

I prefer Emilia, if you have to go down that road. Like Emila Fox, she's pretty.

emeraldbell · 26/01/2010 14:32

Thanks for all the replies ladies! Amelia is out of the picture now as I was using it to go with the nickname Milly - I just found out/remembered that DH's Dad's family dog is Milly - pfft! I know there was a problem with a dog somewhere with that name!

Ok so we're back to searching for a 'top' name. Out of the list Dh's fave is Cara. I like Edith - though not in absolute love with it just yet. Though I rarely fall in love with a name, it grows on me.

Kitty is my gran's name (Kathleen, but she's always been Kitty). I could go with that as first name but I'm not sure that I'm brave enough! Which is more correct anyway, Kittie or Kitty?

Boys names have been bugging me too - We did choose Oliver, Noah and Elliot. Oliver being Dh's fave. I like it but it really is VERY common. I prefer Noah.

I like Lewis. Ethan too (though with an Irish accent and knowing some of my family, that could be pronouced 'Eatan'!)

mathanxiety · 26/01/2010 14:40

Why not Kathleen? It's a fabulous name, imo. You could use Kitty (not Kittie) as a nn. Kathleen is SO much nicer than Caitlyn et al.

I would avoid Ethan if it's going to be Eatan. Lewis is lovely, also Elliot. Oliver and Noah are very popular.

emeraldbell · 26/01/2010 14:46

Don't think Kathleen floats my boat at all! Much prefer Kitty I think, and I usually like a 'full' name!

Yes, I think you're right Eatan is not the nicest of names is it? lol

PotPourri · 26/01/2010 14:48

Gorgeous names! I agree Amelie is too close to Emily. My friend has an Amelia, she gets called Meely, kinda like Milly. I agree that Milly is a nice name. What about Matilda (Tilly)? I think Amber is gorgeous incidentally.

snurgy · 26/01/2010 15:05

Edith and Kitty are the best and Noah the best from the boys. I dislike Ethan and Lewis. Finn & Noah sound like brothers.

SqueezyB · 26/01/2010 16:57

I like Amalia, the Spanish version of Amelie. I worked with one and always thought what a lovely name.

I know an Amelie who is shortened to Ami rather than Millie, so you could always go with that?

I really don't like Kitty as a first name, sorry - lovely as a nickname for Kathleen or Katherine though.
