Lara! (my name, so perhaps I'm a tad biased?!)

Also know a Larissa and I like that too!

boodleboot · 27/01/2010 18:01

Seems like Lara has the edge....i would of thought Lissy would have been the obvious NN for Larissa?

Lara.

Larissa a bit too fussy for my taste. Variations on this (Clarissa, Karissa, Marissa) very popular round these parts.

boodleboot · 27/01/2010 18:12

you don't feel then that Lara is just a bit....well....unfinished?

i do really like it, infact the only name i think i like more is Susannah and that has been my fav for donkeys yrs....

We had the same debate - if the registrar at the hospital had been open when DH went to register her the day she was born she would have been Larissa with n/name Lara. As it was shut we had a few weeks to think about it and went with Lara as we had only ever called her that name and it would suddenly have seemed wierd if Larissa was used in formal situations, eg at the doctors etc.

boodleboot · 27/01/2010 18:34

Is it still fairly unusual as a name tho? I had an unusual tho not unheard of name and i really liked being the only one in the school etc...

what reactions do you get to the name?

People seem to like it - hear a few Dr Zhivago references, but I get a lot of 'what a lovely name' when we are out. Haven't met another yet but my children are both pre school so am sure I will soon enough. I've always loved the name though so am fairly unbothered about what people think.

boodleboot · 28/01/2010 08:05

well its my secret beautiful fall back name should i find nothing i like better.....i am very fickle when it comes to names but SOOO love DR ZHivago film, so romantic....

I can't stand the name Lara, I don't know what it is but I just dislike it. Reminds me of Lara Croft too.

MimsyStarr · 28/01/2010 20:50

Lara.

HarleyQuinn · 28/01/2010 23:31

Larissa

clemette · 28/01/2010 23:35

Lara - strong woman. Larissa - bit of fluff/footballer's wife.

nikkisbump · 29/01/2010 09:57

Lara

I don't like Larissa, sorry It reminds me of Melissa which I can't stand!

Jenbot · 29/01/2010 12:42

Larissa is too fussy. I like Lara.

Abubu · 29/01/2010 15:14

Lara!
That is one on our shortlist too

albinosquirrel · 04/03/2010 18:47

In Russia - full name is Larissa- shortened form in Lara- so Lara would have been Larissa in full in Dr Zhivago... (equally get clara from Clarissa i think)

orienteerer · 04/03/2010 18:48

Lara - so much easier for child to learn to spell.

ManicMother7777 · 04/03/2010 19:00

Lara - beautiful.

StrictlyKatty · 06/03/2010 19:53

Lara

LittlePushka · 06/03/2010 20:01

menomena · 06/03/2010 23:42

Lara but with Larissa as full name.

Kitkatqueen · 07/03/2010 00:06

What about Laria as a compromise between the 2?

First A can be pronounced as a long a or a short a iykwim?

ChoreDodgingHairyTrucker · 08/03/2010 12:46

Lara.

Larissa and clarissa and Vanessa and Melissa are not my style.

I used to go kayaking in claragh laragh when i was about 14 or 15. great fun. I think it was up in Laragh. Did they have a kind of water sport resort there? so long ago now, i can't remember exactly where the place was! in the 'cunthree'
