Ava, Isla, is too popular too bad?

I really like these two names but I am quite upset that they are so popular.

Would you rule out a name because it is too popular?

No. Go with what you'll like. Seven years ago my friend chose Ruby as it was unusual then. Now look at it! Her new baby is Pearl which will probably rocket too!

Ziggurat · 20/01/2010 20:14

Go with what you like. I love both those names.

Go for it. I think they are both lovely names. My name is very popular at the moment yet knew none at my schools, college or uni- and thats perhaps going back a few years.

I like both and I would say I have encountered Isla less often, but it is a fab name. They are more emergent than common I would say.

Coldhands · 21/01/2010 10:26

The only boys name me and DH could agree on is quite a common one. We used it as I love the name and didn't care. If we ever have a girl we have quite a common name picked out. If I love it then I don't really care how common it is tbh.

Like both those names. My friends DD is called Isla.

amandine07 · 22/01/2010 20:51

If you like them, I would say don't be put off by them being too popular/perceived as popular.
They are both lovely names!

My DD middle name is Ava...I love it, and wished I had saved it incase I have another daughter! But I have noticed its become very popular. Islas is also very popular I know four Isla's under the age of three.

SqueezyB · 23/01/2010 18:08

I like both names and I haven't actually met any Avas or Islas despite the millions of toddler groups me and DD go to! Neither are in the top 10, or even top 20, so they are not uber-popular like Emily or Lily (we've met a lot of them!)

I find it really off putting as I love short names just like these. In the group of 15 mums I have met in the last 17 months there are so many duplicates and then at school you get know as name plus first letter of your surname.

Big in our lots is Annabel, Joseph & Harry.

Having said that if you like the names and aren't put off by popularity then go for it!

Wolfblass · 24/01/2010 22:30

Do you know may Avas or Islas? No ? Go for it, they are equally lovely names

I have Georgia (Georgia-Mae , 6) when pg with her i knew of no Georgias and the name wasn't popular at the time. She was born in January and by the folliwing year it was in the top 10

Our son is Gabriel (10 months) and we know of no Gabriels and get raised eyebrows, BUT the name is in the top 100........

knittingmama · 24/01/2010 22:49

I know one Ava and one Isla. Just go for it- my name was no. 1 in 1976 and for some reason there was only 1 other in my entire school. There could be loads in their class/school or none at all! It's better than picking a really 'unique' name then having them teased...
