When you see the name Sami

DS2 has a friend called Sami. His father is a leading academic at one of the top world universities (and is Lebanese) - so definitely not half witted, but has used a name that works both in Arabic and English.

I'd think it was a teenage girl's name, her own version of the lovely name Samantha that her parents' gave her

Depends on the heritage of the boy, tbh. I am not a fan of randomly plundering other culture's pretty names and find it pretentious when done without a family connection. So personally, I find Irish-based names fine (Irish Catholic ancestors), but not, say, Italian names, much as I like them. But not everybody feels the same, and each to their own. I have a friend with a son called Kojo, which means Born On A Tuesday in Ghanaian. Gorgeous name, but I am not half-Ghanaian like her, so wouldn't use it.

If I saw Sami written down i'd expect a Finnish boy or at least a connection to Finland.

Or i'd think Liverpool fan father and baby was named after Sami Hyypia.

Isn't it a middle eastern name for a boy? It's a lovely name, imho.

I'd think he was probably North African or something and Sami was a diminutive for Samir or somesuch.

Its my DS's middle name, hes half Egyptian. He has a very unusual Arabic first name and we wanted something still Arab, but more European sounding for a middle name.

I would assume it was an asian name (I've seen it quite often) - I think it's related to the name Samir (which is infinitely better, as it was the name of my favourite Coronation Street character...)

I am asking as dh is Moroccan and I am English. He really wants an Arabic name and I can understand this, but just wanted some opinions really.

I would go for Sami then.

No-one would think that you were half-witted and couldn't spell. It is a lovely and popular name.

I know a couple of Samirs known as Sam or Sami. It's a nice name. Go for it.
