Ondine - I'm really liking it

Ok, so not even pg (despite much trying but was just listening to a dramtatisation of an Edith Wharton book and kept hearing the name Undine, the spelling of which I don't like but I really like Ondine. Can't get it out of my head now and have added it to my (actual - not even virtual list (which also includes: Clementine, Beatrice, Isadora and Seraphina, all pretty poncey but I love them).

An Undine/Ondine apparently is a water nymph. I have vaguely heard the name before but it has only just reached my consciousness now.

I love it. What do you think?

am not sure - I can't quite decide if I like it or if its gone poncetasticly too far

will need to think on it a touch more

I like your list though, very similar to all my lists

we also had

Cordelia
Celeste
Penelope
Delphine
Arianna

dizzydixies · 10/01/2010 16:39

and yes, poncetasticly IS a real word

MamaLazarou · 10/01/2010 16:39

I like it a lot.

PrettyCandles · 10/01/2010 16:40

It's mentioned in Little Women - one of the books that Jo loves and reads in secret in the attic, IIRC. And possibly also Beetle in Stalky & Co. Or maybe not...? Hmmm...I can feel a Google or a Wiki coming on...

(BTW, notice that I am not commenting on your names list. )

BonjourIvressedeNoel · 10/01/2010 16:42

sounds like onanism to me.

Bumperlicious · 10/01/2010 16:44

Ah, prettycandles, that may be where I have heard it (Little Women).

See my list is poncetastic in it's entirety but I think individually I could get away with the names, especially as DD's name is unusual (in a rare sense rather than odd sense) though not poncey.

Listen to me, not even bloody pg yet!

welcome, am always good for a few poncetastic suggestions

crabsticks · 10/01/2010 16:55

makes me think Ondine's curse, don't like it!

HerHonesty · 10/01/2010 18:25

sorry, not really to my liking.

bellissima · 10/01/2010 18:30

Ahem is it 'On-deen', 'On-dyne', 'Un-dine' ?? Why do I think of undies and unclean?

cloelia · 10/01/2010 19:37

I like Ondine very much tho Undine in Edith Wharton is named after (i may have got this wrong) a hair wave product, or similar. I also know two Oenone children. both interesting and pretty names imo.

Bumperlicious · 11/01/2010 21:33

Well the american speaking actress said Un-deen though sounded a bit like An-deen, but I am assuming that in a British accent it would be On-deen. I'm liking it more and more. DH needs a bit of convincing though.

Cloelia, how do you pronounce Oenone?

Squishabelle · 11/01/2010 21:45

Sounds like a migraine remedy.

GladioliBuckets · 11/01/2010 22:10

I like Ondine too (Ondeen yeah?). Makes me think of gothic novels and dramatic heroines.

cloelia · 12/01/2010 21:35

the two I know are both "Oh-no-nee" and one is Nonie for short which is nice .

Totallyfloaty35 · 12/01/2010 22:33

It reminds me of my ballet classes from the dim and distant past for some reason. There must be a famous ballet character called Ondine.

well there you go - I clearly haven't lost as many of my marbles as I thought.

Comewhinewithme · 12/01/2010 22:50

Sounds like a painkiller or denture paste.

randomama · 12/01/2010 23:27

I love it but thought it was for a boy - like Ondine the Warhol Superstar.

gagamama · 12/01/2010 23:38

I just clicked on this thread from Active Convos and I honestly thought it was going to about some kind of medication....

Sorry.

Plonker · 12/01/2010 23:45

The first thing I think of is Ondine's curse
I really don't like it

PixiNanny · 12/01/2010 23:53

I knew that I'd heard something similar before. I wrote a story a few years back involving elementals, an Undine just happened to be my water elemental

I think it's cute but takes some getting used too, much better than a lot of names people give their kids these days!

xmaximumx · 13/01/2010 13:37

It makes me think of medicine. Sorry but there are definite medical connotations there.
