Hello! THinking of this for my DS due later this year! Any thoughts? I had an inkling it might mean clown in GErman?!

Don't know what it means, but sounds lovely, as does Gaspard/ Jasper.

ScaredOfEverything · 02/01/2010 21:24

Thanks! We have a "J" surname so Jasper not really an option...

Why not? Jasper Anthony Jones or something beginning with a vowel in the middle would break it up nicely?!

expo · 02/01/2010 21:27

My sister has a Caspar with an a. I think Casper is the ghost....?

I think Jasper Jones (or whatever) sounds really good. I think some names work really well with the same start letter

However, also really love Caspar

Sariska · 02/01/2010 22:44

Er, yes, with a K it does basically mean clown in German. Kind of the Punch (as in "and Judy") equivalent IYSWIM. But does that matter? I love the name and would seriously have considered it for dc2 were it not for the fact that I have a lot of German friends. But if you don't, is its meaning in German that much of a problem? I bet a lot of names mean something funny/inappropriate/ rude in at least one other language.

Caspar, or Cass for short - talk about poncey. Imagine the effect if yelled on a football pitch to a 40-something bloke. If you ask me (which I appreciate you haven't!) it's up there with Louis and Noah for "fashionable in the Noughties". Bleugh.

nope, not my cuppa i'm afraid, it's trying so hard, it hurts.

CaptUnderpants · 02/01/2010 23:34

Lockets, you would say that, you chose it! But whast does everyone else think? For me, Cass is Ok, at a push, but Caspar is just...cringeworthy.

ChippingIn · 03/01/2010 04:00

Casper - regardless of how you spell it - to me, is a ghost.

I much prefer Jasper (though wouldn't choose it myself), and I like the illiteration with the J surname (unless the 2 really don't go).

I like Casper

GingerbreadFolk · 03/01/2010 09:56

Caspar is a great name.

As is Cass.

I'm imagining the effect of yelling it at a 40yr old on a football pitch and I'm imagining that Cass/Caspar/Cassius/Castiel turns round to see what I want. Excellent, everybody's a winner.

GingerbreadFolk · 03/01/2010 09:58

Actually I've heard blokes shouting each other at football matches. It's all "oi wiggsy" and "on me head banksy". Testosterone soup.

smartmars · 03/01/2010 10:03

I have a Caspar and have a mixed response - people either love it or go so you need confidence in the name. I love it though I occasionally felt a bit silly in the early days, until my confidence grew in my choice of name. Casper is the ghost btw, Caspar is proper imo!

dizzydixies · 03/01/2010 19:01

am not a fan of Casper sorry but I do love Cassian and Cassius

CurlyCasper · 03/01/2010 20:28

it's a ghost-related nickname to me

SuziDee · 04/01/2010 15:05

I have a DS Casper and have had nothing but positive responses (to my face ). I love it the origin is Persian meaning "keeper of the treasure", I also know of two others in our area know I am biased but I think it's a great name.

womaiden · 04/01/2010 15:08

Love it (my DS is Jasper) x

persephoneplum · 06/01/2010 10:25

Casper is fantastic name. I can't use it because my two existing sons already have names of cartoon characters

mopsyflopsy · 06/01/2010 12:40

I can't get the clown connection out of my mind. It certainly isn't a name that would work well in Germany/Austria/Switzerland for that reason.
