Not completely a baby name thing, but I had a black tiny tears when I was little and it was called Binty. I have often worried if it is somehow racist so I thought I would ask here.

Name Gender Origin Meaning Similiar
Binty female Swahili Daughter

I think Binty is a swahili name, so the fact that your doll was black would seem to be in keeping with an African theme.

I don't think it's racist (unless others know better) but I have heard 'daft bint' (addressed to female of any colour) as a sexist expression.

nickelbabyjesus · 16/12/2009 14:40

"bint" is the arabic word for girl as well.

mathanxiety · 16/12/2009 15:33

It has seriously negative associations in the UK.

FishInMyHair · 16/12/2009 22:05

Negative as in related to race or gender?
My Mum died and so I can't ask her why she named it so.

I think it's a combination of two sexist words used against women, one beginning with bi- and the other ending with -nt. But I don't think that particular compound word has always been around -- the original two have been used for centuries AFAIK.

bint with a y on the end... i'd avoid that.
