Any Aussies out there?

DH is Australian. We have very different tastes in baby names. He keeps suggesting names that he thinks are unusual, but that are actually pretty popular here in the UK. I have seen some of them described as 'chavvy' on MN.

His argument is that they are unusual in Australia, which is true for some of them. However, he also claims that people don't name class based assumptions based on names over there and there is no such thing as a chav/bogan name. Is he right?

Lachlan DIFFERENT? Hilarious! he needs to get himself onto Births, Deaths and Marriages to do some research of his own before he makes sweeping statements like that. There are Lachies everywhere.

Any serious contenders, please cross-check with Aussies here on Mumsnet. There are many bogan names here - Madison, Jayden, Addison (any of those 'son' names on a girl are bogan, Chanel, Chantelle... gosh there are just so many. I think it's funny he thinks there's no naming class system in Australia. It definitely exists.

God, so many Lachlans! So many Bronwyns!!

I love Aussie men Can never get my head around why I left my fair shores and came here and married a Pom

On the flip side of your dh never having met a Lachlan and therefore refusing to believe that it is popular .. my dh suggested a name for our dc2 which I shot down in flames as being too common (as in popular). This was based on the fact that I had met one person in my entire life with this name

We eventually went with it for dc3

Westie names are definitely a no-no and social connotations are as rife in Australia as anywhere else.

I'm English and fairly middle class if I'm honest and I wouldn't say Zoe was a chavvy name (I love it) it's very ancient - If it's good enough for Darcey Bussell...
