Talk to me about Tristan

please. I'm stuck for a boy's name. I like Tristan, but I'm not sure how popular it is. I'd also like to know what people think of it - does it feel nice or not? Is it a heavy name for a little boy?

Its my favourite boys name and should the next baby we have be a boy he will be Tristan.

But it doesn't seem to be overly popular (or have I missed the trend?) and doesn't seem to draw a strongly negative response. At least not here.

In my DD's junior school, where there are 90 children per year, there is 1 Tristan she knows of so its not terribly popular here.

BUT I do think it's poncy (in exactly the same category as Sebastian) and would be hard for some boys to carry off.

It does make me think of the myth Tristan & Isolde but I see Tristan as heroic and romantic in that. I don't associate it as been a tragic or doomed name in the same way I do say Ophelia and Jonah.

I do think of 'triste' when I hear Tristan, so maybe a little bit sad....

but otherwise it is a nice, underused name.

He is a gorgeous 5 year old who is popular and overall lovely (not that I'm biased of course ). And we are certainly NOT posh!

Uncanny thread! I have just had a BFP, hoping for a boy and DH and I both love the name Tristan (as DH is cornish)...we wondered if it is a bit girlie and therefore a bit of a bully-magnet kind of name...but saying that, I know very strong confident boys with Latin and mythological names...

No. Triste means "sad".

I watched Legends of the Fall, AGAIN, last night, way past my bed time. Just stumbled across it on Sky. What a Tristan he was.

It means noisy/racket, and he lives up to his name.
Plus it's fairly difficult to pronounce - he called himself Tis-tis for a while (which I loved ) and even now at 2 1/2 called himself Tistan. Can't be the only name like that though.

The same way you wouldn't think of a man's privates when they call him "Dick". (as in short for Robert)

To me Tristan has connotation of a surfer dude :D
One of my new-mum friends has a 6 months old son called Tristan, I really like it.

My friend's 1 year old is called Tristan, I wasn't sure when she was trying to think of names (wanted her to choose Dylan, another of her choices) but when I saw him, Tristan was perfect! He gets called 'Mr T' as well which I LOVE

My cousin's son is called Tristan and he's certainly not posh or 'wet' and is a big hit with the girls (he's 21). He is kind and thoughtful, however, and I think Tristan suits that personality. He's never been bullied or teased for it and everyone always thinks it's a lovely name - which it is . We all call him Tris.

PS Personally, I always think of men's privates when someone is called Dick

There was a horrible one 2 years above me at school and that has tarnished the name for ever for me. Not common or popular at all, use it if you like it, there won't be another 5 in the class if that's what you are worried about.
