And even with the most popular name you'd be really unlucky to have another one in your class - there are a lot of babies born every day!

Mind you, 13 years ago I named my daughter something I thought was elegant, beautiful, classic and so unusual she would never meet another. She's called........Grace!

Gorgeous but v popular, 3 in my DS reception class.

I'm pleased you asked this as I'm having the same dilemma! Ruby is the only name Dh and I currently agree on for dd3. Hmm... I also have a Lily (aged 6) and there are only 2 in her whole school so maybe it doesn't matter too much.

Ineedsomesleep · 06/12/2009 14:47

Don't really agree Seeker. I have a name that was very popular at the time and there were 5 in my class and there are 3 of us at work.

I have an 11 week old Ruby, don't know any others and it was th only name DH and I were agreable on. She was Ruby from the day of the 20 week scan.

Although popular I only know one in RL who is 15.

Ruby Elizabeth is beautiful and if you love the name then you must choose it. Why settle for one you like less?

winjy · 13/12/2009 10:29

omg!! ruby elizabeth is the name we have chosen if we have a baby, ruby is dp's nans name elizabeth my middle name!! i only know one other ruby so not that popular round here...i love all ur other names apart from lola...i like summer too...i also like lunar!! but ruby elizabeth def the best!! did u think of any boys names as we are struggling a bit with them...

Littlefish · 13/12/2009 11:06

We chose a name for dd that as far as we knew, there were no others of around. It turns out we were very, very wrong. Dd is in a class of 20 and there are 4 girls with the same name, or shortened version of it. There were due to be 5, and luckily one of them left! It means that dd will always be known by her first and surname. No big deal I suppose, but it also means that I always have to explain who she is when I'm talking to other mothers. We still love the name, but it's a bit of a pain.

Aren't they about to bring back Upstairs Downstairs? I wonder if gormless Ruby will reappear in adult form. (Once again I find myself defending my advanced age - in fact I used to watch reruns on French TV every Sunday when I lived abroad (ie not only old but very sad).

GetDownYouWillFall · 13/12/2009 11:30

my dd is a december baby, I always remember the woman in the bed next to me called her dd summer. I thought it an odd name for a december baby.

Ruby is great, go with your first choice. What does your dh think?

PanicMode · 13/12/2009 18:49

There are three in my DSs year at school, my best friend has just had one, and my neighbour has one (and her sister is Lola!), so it's very popular where we are, so I wouldn't use it personally, although it's pretty.

It's hard though - when we named DS1 (Theo/dore) it was unusual and it was well outside the top 100 - now it's in the top 50 I think, and there seem to be a fair few of them around!

If you love it, use it

rusmum · 13/12/2009 21:14

I have a Ruby and know another 7!!! Love it but it is very popular. I would have \Edie if i could change my mind!
