I am not too convinced but would loved to use this name in honour of my mother!

I once heard a mother in Aberdeen saying to her daughter 'No Imelda, you're nae getting another pair of shoes'. That is my main 'impression' of the name (and it made me laugh).
If it's to honour your mother, I'd say go for it.

Did she have a middle name? Or how about Immy as a nn and using Imogen?

I think when you honor a family member it doesnt matter what the name is or how unusual it is, it's always a nice gesture and nobody can criticise or judge, i think Imelda's quite cute anyway

I think it's lovely to honour your mother
by using her name or a variation of her name. I would use it as a middle name though because even though it's a perfectly nice name I wouldn't want my daughter to have the same first name as my mother, personally, even though my mum is dead. If she was alive it would feel even odder somehow. All my children have middle names linked to one of their grandparents, actually.

I think shoes too. It is lovely to use a family name but I don't like it much for a child really. It would be a grow into it name but you could nn her Immy or Mellie or whatever sticks.

I wanted to name dd after my Aunt who was like a Grandma to me but her name was Queen so I didn't..

It reminds me of the film the commitments... Hav no idea why thats honestly wat popped into my head when i read the name, its a grand name i quite like melia tho

we call my cousin Melda due to her obsessive shoe habit! its not the prettiest shortening however I agree its a lovely way to honour your mum

we have variations of my mums and MIL names in the girls names and although not exact it still has the same meaning to all of us

The shoes association won't affect her generation as much as our's, and there are plenty of nice shortenings -Mel, Melda, Mella, Mellie, Immy- to choose from if you wish.

I was thinking to use it as Middle name as well, however I could not come up with a nice name to rhyme it with or at least which would be a nice match!

I don't think it needs to rhyme, just flow.

It's a nice name. People will think of the shoes association once or twice, then they'll get over it and think only of your DD. It's a nice sounding name.

The bully from Grange Hill was called Imelda, if I remember correctly.

It's a nice name though.
