Due date in a few weeks and we still haven't decided on a girls name.

Our (current) shortlist is

Martha
Marla
Jemima
Clara
Maria
Leah

What are your thoughts on these names? Middle name is probably going to be Elizabeth. We have a DS called Ethan. Do these names 'go' with Ethan?

TIA

Congratulations.

Like all of them.

Least favourite are Marla, Jemima and Clara.

Favourite is Martha then Maria.

Hard to decide isn't it! Which one does your DH like best?

moyasmum · 05/11/2009 09:00

Go with Martha/maria -classic names (can play around with shortening it if you need to ).
Too many leahs atm, didnt donald trump marry a marla? good luck

LoveFalafel · 05/11/2009 09:07

Thanks for your thoughts.

DH prefers Maria or Leah but these are my least favourite (hence at the bottom of my list )

I'd go with Maria, it was on my girl name shortlist (irrelevant as we had a boy)

RomanCandleJollster · 05/11/2009 11:27

Martha - lovely, we couldn't use too similar to surname
Marla - not keen
Jemima - really lovely name - NN little Jem
Clara - very pretty
Maria - ok
Leah - underused IMO. Classic.

Best matches for Ethan &.......? I think Clara... (and works with Elizabeth too)

Good luck.

posieparker · 05/11/2009 11:29

Martha and Jemima are the only ones I like but I do love both of them.

Really like Mima as a shortening too!

lola0109 · 05/11/2009 11:30

I liked Leah and was almost on my shortlist until I read that it meant "cow". Put me off slightly!

I love Martha! I'm going to suggest it to DP for our shortlist!

birdofthenorth · 05/11/2009 11:32

Ooh, I love Marla! Of the others Clara and Maria are my favourites. Like Martha too. All go nicely with Elizabeth.

I vote Marla!

LilyloovesGuyFawkes · 05/11/2009 11:35

Martha my favourite (bias i have one), goes well with Ethan too.

jlo1234 · 05/11/2009 12:39

i love jemima, u can shorten it to loads of things aswel and thers hardly any around! lovely

JustChancesAndChoices · 05/11/2009 12:50

I LOVED Martha when I was pregnant with DS2 but DH didnt & also whenever I mentioned it people would say "Marfa?", and that would really bug me. I suppose you already get that with Ethan - would you want it twice over???

Leah is very common around these parts.

I went to school with a Marla but it seems like the "odd one out" to me - bit American and the others classic British

The other names are all lovely in there own right to.

thirtysomething · 05/11/2009 12:55

All lovely - least keen on Marla and Jemima

Love Martha and Clara in particular - and am sure Clara is due for a BIG comeback v. soon

All go nicely with Ethan too

Leah isn't common at all round here - I've also seen it spelt Lea which is nice too.

Occurred to me that Hannah/Anna is a similar-ish name too and would go with Ethan

bellissima · 05/11/2009 13:05

Agree JustChances - too many ths, or possibly fs with Martha and Ethan. And is it just me or does it sound a bit Emmerdale?

Clara I love love love. was on my shortlist.

doubleexpresso · 05/11/2009 20:47

Ethan and Martha has a nice ring to it.

busymummy3 · 22/11/2009 00:48

i like leah think the others are too old fashioned

mrsjuan · 22/11/2009 00:52

Lovely names. I like really like Marla and Clara- both were on my list although they are not great with our surname.

skymoo · 22/11/2009 01:33

not keen on Jemima (she will probably call herself Mimi once she gets older) but the others are lovely

I love Olivia fwiw

QandA · 22/11/2009 07:10

I like Marla, unusual, but not odd iyswim.

I also like Clara.

qwerty123 · 22/11/2009 23:58

Martha (try to twist your DH's arm!) - it's a great name.

jellybeans · 23/11/2009 00:20

Martha not keen, very in now
Marla quite like
Jemima really dislike
Clara like
Maria dislike, old fashioned
Leah like

I like Clara best, goes well with Elizabeth and Ethan.

slushy06 · 23/11/2009 10:22
