I'm too embarrassed to ask this in real life, as I should know, but how does punctuation work in
names ending in s. I know for most names it's

Sarah's ( belongs to Sarah or Sarah is)
Sarahs (plural of Sarah)
Sarahs' (belonging to a group of people called Sarah)

So how does it work for James, Douglas, Alexis etc?

James is either James' or James's.

Probably the latter is more common.

agree with abraid

What abra1d said. As in Bridget Jones's Diary. Jones' would also be correct, but a little outmoded.

I write James' for my James. I think James's looks messy but thats just my opinion

LynetteScavo · 16/10/2009 19:38

But do not say James' boook/car/whatever; it is James's book/car/whatever.

My mother says the first, adn it drives me mad!
