Is Sebastian insanely popular where you live?

If we ever had a third boy, we'd be seriously stuck for names. I have always loved Sebastian but nixed it based on popularity. Around here it's as common as Andrew or Michael was in the 70s and 80s! My husband thinks it's too posh though, which saddens me.

So how many have you come across? I think there are three at my sons' daycare of about 60 kids. I don't care if it's mildly popular but not on the level that Jack is, for example.

I don't know of any Sebastians. I always wanted one though.

DorotheaPlentighoul · 14/10/2009 13:32

Don't know any in RL, but that may be because we're in Scotland.

My DS1 is Sebastian.

Hes the only one we know.

None others at the school or registered at our drs.

good choice

Jamieandhismagictorch · 14/10/2009 13:37

I live in London. I have never come across any in my very child-heavy area.

Sorry, I agree with your DH

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 14/10/2009 13:37

I like it a lot - it was my hamsters name .

I don't know any Sebastians - young or old

Carrotfly · 14/10/2009 13:49

I like it and would have used it except it doesnt go well with our surname.

I've only ever come across 1 Seb in my 42 years, a guy I worked with. He definitely wasnt posh.

I think your husband is wrong.

KEAWYED · 14/10/2009 13:51

I can hand on heart say my 6 year old son isn't posh.

persephoneplum · 14/10/2009 13:56

Oh I totally agree Carrotfly and KEAWYED. I think hubby is being ridiculous, especially when we know a few little Sebastians who are of course, very lovely boys. The fact that it's common around here also takes away the posh factor through sheer usage.

I love the nickname Seb I got to pick DS2's name because husband was all out of ideas. Chances are I'd have my little Sebastian ;) Plus it has the bonus that my husband's mother loves it and had it pegged for our second son's name.

I will add he a lovely boy and his teachers love having him in his class.

Go for it and if the MIL loves it you will go up a step in her eyes

Iklboo · 14/10/2009 13:59

No - Bradon/Brandon/Bradley is the name of choice round ours

motheroftwoboys · 14/10/2009 14:09

Our DS2 is called Sebastian. He is 17 and I loved the name from the Cockney Rebel song of the time "Somebody Called Me Sebastian" and from Brideshead! No other reason. We are not particularly posh and live in the north east. I work in an Independent school (we would say the best in the north east and I just checked and we have two Sebastians in a school of fourteen hundred pupils. So if you are wanting an unusual name go for it. I think it is lovely. Our son also gets called Seb and we called him Bat or Bastian when he was little. Anyway what is wrong with having a "posh" name. Can't see it being a disadvantage of life but having a "common" name certainly could be seen as one as people have misconceptions. We don't have any Waynes, Darrens or Zacs - didn't know what else to check. Have had fun.

hulabaloo · 14/10/2009 14:10

No, I don't know that many Sebastians in the UK. While I think Sebastian is nice, Seb or Sebbie isn't (reminds me of sebacious = oily).

I don't really get the obsession with 'poshness' and 'chavviness' here in the UK, but in most other countries Sebastian is just a name. I know quite a few German ones.

Carrotfly · 14/10/2009 14:14

Maybe its not a very northern name then ? I dont know.

How interesting mo2b, I know the girls school gives you a good run for your money wrt your claim

my DD goes there if ite where I think

bellissima · 14/10/2009 14:16

Know two little Sebastians round here (bucks). Hmm - motheroftwo if it's the school I'm thinking of there were some well dodgy boys names there in the 70s!!

Trikken · 14/10/2009 14:19

sebastian is ds's second name, I love it. personally i would have used it for his first name but dh didnt want it as the first name.

motheroftwoboys · 14/10/2009 14:20

Carrotfly - as I said - we like to think we are the best - the girls school don't like us any more now we take girls!! Does anyone else want me to check any names?

Carrotfly · 14/10/2009 14:26

never met a local MNetter before sorry persephone for the hijack !

DD is staying where she is, but DS1 (not a Seb as previously mentioned) might move the 2 miles down the road in a couple of years.

motheroftwoboys · 14/10/2009 14:28

No doubt I will meet you at an Open Morning in the future apologies again persephone - we Geordies can get overexcited!!

LaDiDaDi · 14/10/2009 23:48

Further hijack alert

I like Sebastian, I've tried to persuade dp to like it too but he seems fairly stuck with Edward or George for ds1 but neither of them are really grabbing me tbh.

Any Arthurs at school, motheroftwoboys?

bellissima · 15/10/2009 09:24

Aha motheroftwo - it must be that school. I was at the 'brown one' across the road. Anyway, definite bunch of Declans, Kevins, Keiths etc on your side of the track way back when (and can't recall any Sebastians).

bellissima · 15/10/2009 09:27

PS Also apologise for this Geordie hijack. One particular Geordie name thing (was reminded by Our Friends in the North) I can't stand is pronouncing Anthony 'An-thu-nee'. ugh ugh ugh. And funnily enough, amongst all the Kevins there were always quite a few 'Ants' up there. But no Sebastians.

gladders · 15/10/2009 09:46

don't know any sebastians (S London)

not overly keen personally - but not because it's posh...

weaselbudge · 15/10/2009 10:25

I live in surrey and surprisingly don't know any sebastians. I know two arthurs though and lots of georges.

edward23 · 15/10/2009 15:53

I know one and hes three years old. wouldn't be my choice but if you like it go for it.
