After reading the other thread I thought it might be interesting to see and list the different names we all think are pretentious.

My friends DC's are called
Ptolomy Gerald and
Hermiome Rainbow followed by a double barrelled surname

I think that is pretty spectacular, but seems to suit them somehow.

Cortina · 30/09/2009 08:22

I love Ptolomy and think many do but are too scared of what others think to go for it. It will sound like 'Tolemy' when spoken (I think) and I personally love that sound.

Wasn't there are character in The Children of Green Knowe with this name?

Hermione also great. Also like Hester.

FimbleHobbs · 30/09/2009 08:30

I always think names that a child has to live up to - or if not they look foolish - are unfair. Or names that limit a child/person.

Mainly things like Prince, Princess, Dad's name Junior. Or Floaty-Pretty-Fairygirl / Hero-Swaggering-Actionboy type of names.

I like unusual names, and plain common names (my DC have the latter) but I think they should leave scope for the child to be 'their own person'.

simplesusan · 30/09/2009 09:05

I agree FimbleHobbs about dad's name junior it really makes me want to vomit.

honeydew · 30/09/2009 13:40

saw one the other day I've not come across before-

Crispian.

Sourdough · 30/09/2009 13:48

Riley Jakk.

Why?

yelpol · 30/09/2009 13:49

napoleon - a boy of about 4 yrs i know of. loveday - a little girl in a nursery class i taught...

hellokitty123 · 30/09/2009 13:50

Neither had I, but when googling 'Crispian' surprisingly many real life Crispians come up .

Cortina, I agree about 'not forgetting' someone who has a less common name. But that can also be a good thing. We're currently having some work on our house done, and 3 out of the 5 builders are called Steve... now that is the downside of having a 'common' name - well, for me anyway, as I keep get them mixed up... .

heartonsleeve · 30/09/2009 13:51

Lockets - the St John in the Bible is St John the disciple, not John the Baptist

Jamieandhismagictorch · 30/09/2009 13:58

Maverick

thumbwitch · 30/09/2009 19:01

yelpol, my practice nurse was called Loveday, but she's in her 50s

I had heard of Crispin before, but not Crispian..

QOD · 30/09/2009 19:08

Xerxes Zeus (a persian name, and he is lily white as are his parents)

I do agree that to mock the poor (chavs if you must) is a rather mean pastime.

and

am I the only one to find these kinds of posts rather creepy?

QOD · 30/09/2009 22:28

creepy?
whatevah!

nevergoogledragonbutter · 30/09/2009 22:39

Ooh, i have lots of favourite names on this thread. i love delphi and artemis.

honeydew · 30/09/2009 23:15

honestly, it WAS Crispian! I had e-mailed the Open University and my reply was from a Crispian. I really noticed it and thought how unusual!

thumbwitch · 01/10/2009 20:03

honeydew, I believe you completely - just hadn't heard of it before!

There is a prof I know who is called Vyvyan, spelt like that too. Poor man - bet it's been a trial to him over the years.

I was referring more to the spelling than the name, lockets.

I wanted to use Ever as a name for one of our DDs but was talked out of it for being too pretentious

nevergoogledragonbutter · 01/10/2009 21:08

not pretentious at all dd, sounds like her off eastenders.

dizzydixies · 01/10/2009 21:10
