Is the name Florence too popular?

Hi all, i'm new to MN and need opinions! Would like to call our imminent arrival Florence but i've heard rumors of a current surge in popularity. Have you heard it much recently. The other option is Heidi.

Stick to Florence-unless there is a sudden surge with new babies you will be fine. (I dislike Heidi-although I loved the book as a DC).

It's quite popular where I live, but it's still very pretty. I'd steer clear of Heidi if I were you (we had a song in Guides about Heidi-Heidi-hi-diddly-dee).

I loved the book too, thats why I like it. I was in Guides but don't remember that song. lol

There was a frightful Heidi TV adaptation (early 80s perhaps?? I used to laugh at it with my Gran. It was the dubbed English voices over the Austrian mouth-movements that really entertained us). That in itself would put me off...

I prefer Florence, Heidi is one of Kerry Katona's kids isn't it?

I have only ever met one (3 year old) Florence where I live (south london)

It's one of those names that you always here is popular, but I have not heard of any around here. I think it's nice and much prefer it to Heidi.

I adore the name Florence! It entered the Top 100 last year (no.94), so obviously growing in popularity, but still some way off being "too popular" I think.

I know a couple of Florences and that wouldn't put me off using it. If you like it, go for it. Lovely name.

I prefer Florence out of the two but it is still abit old ladyish for me and a relative I know who has it hates it and uses her middle name. No idea why as it is not that bad. Do you like the short terms Flo and Florrie?

sorry didn't answer the question, it is popular where I am but nowhere near as much as Evie, Grace, Olivia and Isabelle etc. I don't think it is too popular to use.

My Florence is a week old and I just heard that my dh's friend called his baby Florence, she was born 2 days after mine.

I think it has just entered the top 100 so not v popular but may be on the rise. It is a lovely name, as is Flora. I much prefer either of these to Heidi.

I don't know any Florences in RL but there was a thread the other day (not in baby names though maybe AIBU) about someone using 'her' name and lots of people responded saying it is very popular and you can't claim a name.
Must depend on your area though

I do like the shortened names too Jellybeans. Especially Flossie for some reason though i'm sure others will hate that! Thanks for your help everyone, i think we're going for it. Although...after all this it'll probably turn out to be a boy!

Now some time has passed are there any more Florences to report? Has it become more popular?

It's top of my boyfriend's list but I'm just not 100% sold on it. I think it may be a bit too trendy (because of Florence and the Machine)

Also, what are the possible NN for Florence? Flo, Florrie, Flossie....?

It is highly likely to be the name of our dc if dc3 turns out to be a girl.
Flossie will be her nn.

like florence but don't like any of the shortened versions personally....

but even flossie or flo s better than heidi IMO
