I only like one boy's name - and it's my friends sons name - Is that wrong?

Hi, I was on this weeks ago struggling to find any names and now I have some i really like.
Girls - Olivia
Alexandra
Madeleine

Boys - Luke

Problem is, a mum I have met since having my DS has a boy same age as mine and his name is Luke. She is also due her 2nd baby same time as me and I've yet to drop the clanger that I want to steal her son's name!
Is this wrong? How would you feel if it was you?

I should also explain, this isn't a close friend, it's a mum I keep in touch with once in a blue moon as she works 4 days a week and our kids will go to different schools, don't know if that makes a difference?
I have honestly tried to think of another boys name and I like NOTHING else. I was on here a while ago trying to get ideas and nothing but Luke excites. It goes so well with my DS's name Evan and really well with our extra long horrible irish surname - not an easy task!
Give me your honest opinion and also what you prefer of the girls names. Thanks

Go for it. She does not have copyright on Luke.

I like all of your girls names, particularly Alexandra.

I think it's flattering! Also with respect, it isn't unusual so if you REALLY don't want you kid's name to be reused, you go with Rumplestiltskin.

I really don't think it matters.... One of my friends is due in November and told me yesterday that my dsd's name is top of their list for girl's names. We are close but don't get to see each other much and are in different areas. I certainly didn't think it was odd - if anything, its quite flattering

I like all of your girl's names as well. DD was almost Madeleine. I like longer names that can be shortened and really like Liv, Lexie and Maddy. If anything, I'd say Olivia goes least well with your ds name.

Use it, you will regret it if you dont. My DS was meant to be a Samuel but knew a closer friend wanted it and we were due same day she had a girl but still felt I couldnt use it. Next one will be a Samuel as life is too short!

Personally i cant see how it would be a problem but your simplest bet is just to say to the other mum what you have said here, that you only like one boys name and its the same as her sons....does she mind if you use it??

You aren't stealing her son's name. She doesn't own it. If you want to use it then it's fine to do so.

Forgot to say it will be Samuel Luke so yes go for the name Luke its lovely and classic

I asked a friend if she minded that her son's name was in our TOP 3 shortlist.
Not a problem for her as they'd have been different ages and it was obviously a nice name. Chose another anyway when I met ds2.

Thanks everyone, that makes me feel much better. I will wait nearer the due date and then tell her ive nothing else I like. I just wondered how weird she would find it but still don't want to supass a name I actually like for a second best.
I personally wouldn't care if she took Evan's name because i don't see her that often and I would just see it as a compliment - means she likes my son! Just needed to see other people's reactions before hers!

Her son Luke is not going to be contemporary/nursery chum/class mate of your DC2 - in that case, no problems whatsoever and I agree - she will probably take it as a compliment.

You cant call a child Luke ,its a verb in the north of england

Im from Edinburgh, maybe that's why im not getting it.....but i suspect it's because I am actually thick!

It would be a ok i'm sure&she would take it as a compliment i think,otherwise you could also consider,Luca.Lucas a little different.

You might think so, but when I said pre-birth the name we had chosen for DD2 a friend who I was seeing for the first time in about 5 months, who did not live in the same area (by about 90 miles) and who had a 6 year old child by that mine told me categorically that I couldn't call our child by that name because it was hers

I ignored her but it amazed me that she felt such ownership of a name

if you like it use it.No one has dibs on a name

all the fake etiquette oh shall i shant i use same name as ole whatsherface

preposterous and precious if someone gets arsey anyone has temerity to chose their name
