I really like Layla if it's to be a girl... good, bad or indifferent?

I don't think Leila is a more arabic spelling actually, Layla is more like the actual arabic.
Leila to me seems like people trying to spell it too exotic. I think maybe its more Persian spelling though not sure?

Why would nobody say to a Layla she had a lovely name KnickersandVest? I would!

I much prefer it spelt Leila but I think it's beautiful either way. No-one of her age will make any Eric Clapton associations.

Big Mo from East Enders! She's just been on Come Dine With Me, was surprised by her RL name

I think its a really pretty name but a friend's little girl is called layla and i keep calling her lola by mistake........ That might be me being thick (i blame pregnancy brain of course!)...... Or may mean its an easy one to get wrong and she'll be always correcting people and it'll irritate her forever!
my best friend's called marianne and its one of her biggest pet hates that noone can get her name right she's often called marion, mary-anne, marina etc!
Just something to consider! x

By mumtojust3whippetsuntilno... I do prefer the Layla spelling - the Leila spelling seems more Arabic, and we have no Arabic connections, so I'd prefer to use the (what I feel is a) more Western version.

Since surnames can be spelled in many ways, the Leila spelling isn't more or less Arabic. There are lots of Arab people called Leila while others are called Layla....
Actually the name Leila or Layla is very common in Arab countries...

you're totally right MrsBadger

clapton · 27/09/2009 07:54

Personally I love the name.

ToffeeAddict · 27/09/2009 18:07

@ Roquine no she isn't , and thank you for the lesson in the spelling origins, but that's already been pointed out further up the thread

simplesusan · 28/09/2009 09:03

I don't like it as it always reminds me of that twat Eric Clapton.
