I know these names are v popular and so am a bit put off. Like simple names along these lines though. Middle name agreed as Thomas (family links). Really like Ben but that's taken by family... Any other suggestions? Please?!

Agree that Jack is lovely - but there are sooo many of them around.

What about Jake instead (could be Jacob for 'long')?

When I was pregnant with dd3, I only liked two boys names - Miles and Lucian. Had about 20 girls names!

Justin is classic and underused IMO. I like Robin, Aidan, Adam and Marcus as well. Agree that girls' names are easier.

I have a Sam(uel) who'll be one next week. I havn't met any other baby Sams. It doesn't seem to be THAT popular. Well used, well known and well recognised, because it is an old, old name, but doesn't seem to have peaks of fashionableness. I do know, and have met other Sams, but of all sorts of ages. None under 5. Not like Grace and Oliver, you can't move for baby, toddler and preschool Graces and Olivers round here. Sam is pretty unique!

I have a Ralf and I love it (obviously!) I quite like that it is a bit different but non wierd. I am living in hope that the penis connectin will have died out by the time he is older! Do kids still read Judy Blume?

Thanks for all your suggestions. It is made doubly hard by being a teacher and having taught quite a few of the names which I would no doubt otherwise like!
I think we will probably go with Sam, but we are going to wait and see. It's simple and traditional, but not too popular, as others have said. Plus I think it works well as a baby's, child's and man's name. THank you!
