I think the name Bethany is so lovely, but apparently there is a little girl on Corrie called this. Does that make it un-usable??!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
DebiTheScot · 27/08/2009 09:20

I like it too but wasn't allowed to use it because of her being in Corrie (and I had 2 boys so not really appropriate!) but she's not in it anymore. Don't know if she'll come back though. I don't think it's an issue now as she is about 6.

onlyanauntie · 27/08/2009 17:58

It's a lovely name, I'm considering it myself. I think the Corrie connection was long ago enough to be forgotten.
All the Bethanys I teach are delightful - usually a good measure!

MamaLazarou · 27/08/2009 18:26

Bethany is lovely, as long as you DO NOT spell it 'Bethenay' (my cousin has a friend called this).

SilentBob · 27/08/2009 19:07

I have a Bethany- granted, she arrived waaaaaaaay before Sarah-Lou's daughter on Corrie- but no-one has ever, ever mentioned the soap opera connotation. I love her name.

ReneRusso · 27/08/2009 19:20

don't watch Corrie, I think its ok, but I much prefer the shortening Beth

SilentBob · 27/08/2009 19:26

So does my daughter, Rene! She was definitely a Bethany when wee, but always introduces herself as Beth now she is a bit older.

dizzydixies · 27/08/2009 20:32

its a lovely name and Beth is perfect too

wheresclaire · 27/08/2009 20:40

I really like Bethan as well. We had a Christmas baby and Bethany was on our short list.

MermaidSpam · 27/08/2009 21:33

My dd is Bethany (again, pre-corrie)
I love the name, she gets Beth, Bethie and Bethany.

Mumcentreplus · 27/08/2009 21:37

my DD is a Bethany..lovely classic name.. no corrie connotations here!..Beth,Bethany,Beth Beth..works on many levels

hambler · 27/08/2009 21:40

It's a beautiful name

LoveBuckets · 27/08/2009 22:16

How about Bettany like the author Bettany Hughes?

fanjolina · 27/08/2009 22:48

I love the name Bethany (with Beth for short). Unfortunately DH doesn't.

Clary · 28/08/2009 00:41

I know quite a few Bethanys (Bethanies?) and no-one has ever mentioned to Corrie connection. Nor have I ever thought it myself.

It's not as tho you were talking about namine a child Violet Carson

sweetkitty · 28/08/2009 12:39

a Bethany thread (waves at dizzy)

DD3 13 months and a Bethany we love it. She gets Beths and Bethies or Bethany Be-bop

Bethany is Corrie hasn't been in it for about 2 years now although Sarah-Lou is returning!

It is a New Testament name, a village in Israel where Jesus rose Lazereth for the dead during Holy Week, it's meaning is either House of Figs or House of Song.

There was a thread just recently someone was asking for opinions and it was described as chavvy, dated, hideous, boring and a teenageers rude word (new one on me) but was also described as beautiful

Fimbo · 28/08/2009 12:42

I know a Bethannie, spelt like this so she could be either Beth or Annie

loobylu3 · 28/08/2009 13:40

I wouldn't worry about Corrie at all! It's a Biblical name, not something modern or made up. It's not to my personal taste but nothing wrong with that!

MaggieLeo · 28/08/2009 19:11

I think it's beautiful.

I have a low chav threshhold and I would wince at the likes of Kayden, Jayden, Ellie-mae etc..

But some names, like Leah and Bethany I've seen pasted on here and I'm pretty shocked. Bethany is a place in Israel (I think).

It could be Beth for short.

It's much more feminine than Brittany or Britney. ON coronation street, you MAY remember that sarah-lou wanted to call the baby Britany, and Gail talked her into Bethany instead and everbody breathed a sigh of relief.

The only one I know in real life is the vicar's daughter.

jellybeans · 28/08/2009 23:06

I like it but DD told me her friend (age 13) gets called Beth-fanny for a 'joke' of some of the boys. That may put me off abit but I never thought of it.

jasper · 29/08/2009 00:55

stuff Corrie.
I for one never watch it.
Bethany is a beautiful name

Tinfoil · 29/08/2009 15:20

It's a nice name. Plenty of names appear on TV, in fact it's quite likely to happen with most reasonably popular names at some point.

Jenco76 · 10/11/2013 16:32

My daughter is named Bethany and I didn't even know a child character in corrie soap was called Bethany ! I don't think it is chavvvy at all. I'm my daughters nursery and school many little girls have very short names these days. I like the way Bethany can be shortened to Beth but when she's older she has a choice if she wants to be known as Beth Bethanie or Bethany.
