Can I have Noah with our surname?

I don't think I can but thought I would run it past the MN jury.

our surname is a trade, like Carpenter (its not Carpenter).

so, could you call a child Noah Carpenter or would he always have to put up some bright spark saying, "well, do you?". Or "I don't know a Carpenter but I do know a plumber".

I don't tink you can.

Would be most annoying for the child.

warthog · 24/08/2009 09:22

i wouldn't. it'll get stale very quickly.

littleboyblue · 24/08/2009 09:22

No. I wouldn't.

pasturesnew · 24/08/2009 09:23

depends, Noah Smith would be fine I think.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 24/08/2009 09:24

Hi Twofalls

Are you expecting?

I think Noah will be fine.

There will always be bright sparks who find a way to make a "comedy" name, no matter what your name.

violethill · 24/08/2009 09:24

I've been trying out a few in my head...

Noah Baker
Noah Potter

.... erm, no, I think tbh there will always be some bright spark with a 'witty' response.

weegiemum · 24/08/2009 09:27

I wouldn't, but I wouldn't use Noah at all, esp after hearing my dd2 when age just 3 in a soft play.

Very very posh sounding mother shouting "Nooooo-aaaaah! Noooooo-aaaaaaah!"

Dd2 turned to me and said "has that boy gotta lotta aminals and a bigga boat?"

I admit we are churchgoers, and therefore the story was familiar to us, but it made me snort tea down my nose (not pleasant - it was hot!)

MrsVik · 24/08/2009 09:29

I wouldn't. I didn't really think of the 'know a..' thing - more that Noah built a ship out of wood, so with your surname it sounds a bit funny.

GColdtimer · 24/08/2009 10:01

Hi moveit , yes I am, in March so quite early to be thinking about names but you can't help yourself can you?

Mrsvik, our surname isn't actually carpenter but that is quite funny!

lol at your DD weegiemum

the consensus seems to have confirmed my fears. Never mind, plenty more names out there.

Argh, sorry, I will learn how to read one of these days!

Good luck finding your perfect name

Tidey · 24/08/2009 10:03

Awww, I thought you were going to say your surname was Sark.

SoupDragon · 24/08/2009 10:04

I'm on the "no" side too. There's no need to give easy ammunition.

Also, whilst I love the name Noah, I could never use it due to the fact that all 3 SmallDragons had said "Noah!" in a belligerent tone instead of "No"

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 24/08/2009 19:51

Many congratulations Twofalls. What lovely news

I often think of you and your friend and his dw.

MaryBS · 24/08/2009 19:53

LOL at Noah Sark, you beat me to it!

mellifluouscauliflower · 24/08/2009 20:03

I loved the name Noah and we also have a trade surname. It was going to be our baby's first name but at the last minute we swapped to Noah as a middle name.

I did later learn something later about Noah. Apart from being the ark builder, in later life Noah owned a vineyard and "shamed" his children by appearing naked (and drunk) in front of them.

This is the reason why traditionally this biblical name is not very common.

I am sure this will not make much difference to you but as I wished I had known this first, I thought I would let you know.

Littlefish · 24/08/2009 20:21

I wouldn't do it. Sorry.

Mybox · 24/08/2009 20:24

I wouldn't think of this with this name & trade surname but if it worries you go for another name.

MamaLazarou · 24/08/2009 21:07

No.

nigglewiggle · 24/08/2009 21:11

Jonah? Though they could make something out of that....

GColdtimer · 24/08/2009 21:45

tidey

Thanks moveit, I often think of you too. My friend is doing really well. I hope you are too. xx

Lol! We have friends called Mr and Mrs Carpenter and Mrs C desperately wanted to call her DS Noah but vetoed it for precisely this reason - Noah Carpenter is just awful!

Ironically they ended up going with Harry, but hopefully not many people will remember him!!

HerHonesty · 24/08/2009 22:33

erm. maybe not, but it is a very nice name. and a nice surname, i might add.
