Same name in family

Hi - want your opinion on using my DD1 middle name as the first name for DD2. Is that really bad and will DD2 always feel cheated and not special enough to have own name or can I sell it as 'I wanted my girls to have a connection' etc. Had mixed opinions so far but really love the name and really can't think of another.

Maybe swap them around, so that one doesn't get 2 names of her own, and the other only one..

What's the name? What are all the names? might be able to brainstorm some new ideas that go with your dd1 and are similar to her mn.

I know of a family who did this. Children not bothered at all. In fact they rather like it.

I think you might be right thinking that DD2 might feel cheated a bit but am not an expert. My DD1 is the only one with a middle name and I cannot imagine using it as DD4 first name really.

Forgive me if this sounds rude, but it does seem like a very odd thing to do. Can you really not think of another name? Out of all the millions of names in the world? Personally speaking, I would rather have no middle name at all than my older sister's first name. It seems lazy and unimaginative. Sorry for being so brutal!

maggieBeauLeo - DD1 Mia Hermione so dd2 will be Hermione something. ALways wanted Mia or Maya and now really popular. Thought Hermione was a bit too much as first name when DD1 born but really want it now.

MamaLazarou - don't worry about being brutal. Interesting to know what people think because had so many people say would be fine. Maybe they are not being honest but they usually are quite brutal themselves!!

I don't see what the issue is. It's an unusual thing to do, I would think, but I can't see that it will make any real difference to either girl.

its a nice name but dead popular at the moment (Harry Potter obv) so there will be loads of tehm arpund in 5 years when everyone starts school. I'd go for something else - try looking at other traditional names: mathilda=tilly, elizabeth=betsy , amelia=milly etc to get something really nice that can be special for your special new baby

but i do have a friend who took het sisters name as her middle name when she was conformed, and tehn her sister did the same so they are xy and y x !! they love it but were 11 or so when they chose it for themselves

hmmm, Now I know the names, I don't know if it will work tbh.

Mia Hermione is balanced as a name in itself, Mia complements Hermione perfectly, but Mia and Hermione as sisters ..... one would have a strong, quirky, eccentric name and one would have a soft, simple, modest name.

And supposing you had a Hermione Rose, then in both girls' names, the Hermione overwhelms slightly.

And if you name your second dd Hermione Christabel for example then the two names compete horribly. All Mia would have of her own would be three little letters.

A name that pops in to my head that might work though...Penelope Hazel with Penny for short. It's sort of in the same style as Mia Hermione... Mia and Penny go well together.

How old is DD1?
If she is young (say 2 or less) and doesnt really know her name yet, then you could cahnge her middle name before using Hermione for DD2?

Mia Hermione is OK as a name, but I don´t think that Mia and Hermione go as siblings names.
I would want another short name to complement, rather than compete with Mia.

My dad's littlest brother has my dad's middle name as his first name. It's not been a problem although we do joke about gran and grandad having run out of names by that time!

What sibling names do go with Herminone, out of curiousity?

Beatrice, Penelope, Caroline - other 2 syllable names basically

DP has Jon as a middle name. His younger brother is called John (first name). His younger brother opted to be known as Josh as soon as he had a say in the matter!

I love DD1's middle name and would have loved to have used it for DD2 (when she came along). I didn't simlpy because I worried that DD2 would feel that we had not bothered to give her a name of her own - as above, even if they did change the spelling!

I would say - give DD2 a name of her own.

Also, I have a friend who is the youngest of 4 children. She is the only one without a middle name in her family and has always had issues with that!

Names do seem to be important to some people and not others - but I would say, give them different names but the same number of names (in case either of them does grow up to be a person to whom it matters!)

Ha Pastures! - my dad's two middle names were doled out to younger brothers- and all the nice names seem to be on repeat throughout the rather large extended family. Dad already has two little cousins named after him. Not caused any problems. Everyone quite likes it. They become 'family names' IYSWIM.

As an aside - I dislike the father/son same name thing..one uncle has done this and his name is so old fashioned/ugly
it seems cruel to burden his son with it.

Aren't they both going to have the same surname? Coz if they are, surely that's enough of a connection?
