First name and surname staring with the same letter...

....is this too awful?! The name DH and I both love and have basically chosen starts with the same first letter as our surname. The new baby is another DS, so will never change surname! It is a two syllable name, so it is "broken up" a bit in the middle if you see what I mean...any thoughts?!

do it! one of my kids names is alliterative and I think it sounds great.

It's a strong consonant too. Not sure if it's works as well with a soft one.

imo, Peter Parker, Vicky Vale, Gus Garvey... all sound good.

My Ds is a TT but the surname starts "Th" so it's a different sound.
Still, I don't see a problem with it!

I think it depends on the other sounds in the name. If it rhymes as well as alliterates, or if other sounds are too similar, or if the stress patterns are very similar then I think it can sound bad. However, I think some alliterative names can be nice.

For example, Michael Matchel = bit of a mouthful and sounds silly (imo) because the names not only start with the same letter, but are also the same syllabic length, contain other similar sounds and are stressed in the same way.

Michael Morrison = I think this sounds fine - the amount of syllables are different and only the 'M' sounds alike.

Michael McNeal = although the sounds are similar, the different stresses make the combination sound ok.

So test the name against those various criteria and see how it fares.

Two of my dds have the same first initial as surname and it sounds fine. As previous poster said, it depends on the name and how they sound together.

i nearly did with ds2 but middle name was non negotiable and also started with same letter and in the end i decided 3 names all with the same letter would be too much!

My name growing up was alliterative (with an S) and each had 2 syllabals but they were different enough not to sound too bad...

I think it sounds better if syllable length is different but depends how much you love the name - quick hijack while we are on the subject...I like Hector for (non existent as yet) DS3 but surname is Harman. Does Hector Harman sound like a cartoon character??!!

I like alliteration.

My dp is Lee Lxxx and his cousin was Lisa Lxxx.

Alliteration! That was the word I was thinking of when typing the thread title... - thanks for the thoughts, the two names have the same number of syllables but very different sounds...The first name is one we both really love and can't think of any other we both like, so am reluctant to choose something else just becuase of it.

It definately depends on the sound of the names etc.

My name is alliterated and I really like it, but, my first name is multisylable and is long therefore stretching out many sounds until you get to my surname which although starting with the same letter as my first name has a different second letter. I hope this makes sense!

eg Eleanor Edwards sounds good

Ellen Ellis-not so good.
