I honestly thought I'd never post anything in Baby Names cos I was so sure of my choice - but I've just read on another thread that my chosen name, Ralph, is considered 'awful' by many people !

I am 36 wks pg with DS2. DS1 has very common popular name that was chosen by dh. I absolutely love the name Ralph and wanted it for DS1 but lost out!

I have told no one in RL about my choice except my mum and amazingly found out it was on her short list for my brother and she loves it.

It is very special to me for various reasons, one of the main ones being I knew a Ralph years ago who was one of the sweetest, kindest and loveliest kids I've ever met and have loved the name ever since.

Anyway, does anyone else like it?!

(And what on earth is the Judy Blume reference!)

I like the name Ralph. DH's 12 year old cousin is called Ralph and he's not been teased about it as far as I know. I say go for it

Judy Blume is very of the 80s... none of the kids are gonna know about it until they are at least early teens and even if they do it will be quite passe by then.

I think it is silly the way everyone is up in arms about the penis connection for Ralph when other names such as William (Willy), Richard (Dick), Johnny, etc are much more penisy but cos they are more common and therefore provoke multiple associations in people's mind, no one bats an eyelid. If Judy Blume is the only tenuous link people can think of then I would say it was a fairly safe name to go for! If you love it- follow your convictions and go for it. People will like it more than you think. I think it is a name that will come back but you may be an frontrunner of good taste!
