Beatrice or Hermione or..

Or maybe something else?

We are thinking along the lines of Hermione, or Beatrice or maybe Lily.

DH really likes the names Hermione and Lily ( I do too, and I love Harry Potter so would be very fitting!!)

We go to church though, and Harry Potter is very much shunned by the church and when I even suggested we might be considering Hermione, one of my friend's from church looked horrified.

If we used a name associated with Harry Potter, do you think we'd be shunned from the church?

The see Harry Potter as literally, from the devil (have been thinking maybe we won't shouldn't go back )

I also love the name Beatrice but MIL thinks it's too old fashioned.

Sorry for the name change (Wanted to stay anonomous from some one I know on the boards!)have 4 DC already (none with Harry potteresque names though)

Sorry for the ramble!

Congratulations on number 5! I am very fond of both names. I imagine a Hermione to be very feminine and delicate and a Beatrice to be confident and competent.
I am a church goer and would not flinch at Hermione, the name was around long before the books/films etc. It would concern me though if I thought my child may feel uncomfortable about her name in her own church, so I may change churches or at least speak to a wise and trusted Christian friend about your options. HTH

Hermione is a lovely name. No normal christian is going to think of HP - i don't like HP (cos its crap) and it would never have occurred to me.

I think the actress Hermione Norris of Cold Feet fame

I love HP too, though that would be the exact reason I stray from the names Hermione and Lily. They really are lovely names, but I can imagine that they are becoming really popular and overused again.

If you want to chose a name from the books, what about looking into some of the lesser used characters? Or even the names that are commonly mistaken? I've met tonnes of little girls called Virginia who proudly tell me that they've been named after Ginny Weasley; I haven't the heart to tell them that she is actually a Ginevra

Beatrice is lovely too though

I can't believe your church friends would be funny at Hermione - bizarre!

Still, I would pick Beatrice over Hermione, in actual fact Beatrice is my top name should I have DD2.

I love Beatrice, Hermione and Lily. hermione was a name long before HP and tbh your church friend is being utterly ridiculous. And your choice of name is nothing to do with your mil!

I also really like Yolande, which I always think has a similar 'ring' to Hermione.

I am drawn more towards Beatrice myself, though I'm sure nothing will be decided till she is born and I can look at her and see what name suits her!!

audley - I had thought about that too, I can imagine parents saying "Oo stay away from Hermione!".
Though possibly the friend I chose to discuss the name with was not the best choice. She thinks that if you read the spells/curses in the book, by reading them, you are casting them on yourself

I love both names - I agree you could name her after one of the lesser characters. I've always liked Luna very much.

I would fine a new church, there are plenty out there you just need one that suits you!

Love the name Hermione Beatrice, both nice and go well together too

I adore the name Hermione! I'm a Christian & it was on our short list for our 2nd DC (who turned out to be a boy who we named Elijah )

I think it's a very pretty, elegant, feminine name & I will be always be quite sad that I never got to use it (though I wouldn't swap Elijah for the world ) we would have shortened it to Minnie

As a Christian and a Harry Potter fan myself, I can say that I really wouldn't have a problem with a child named Hermione. In fact I love it, it was our number one choice for DC3 who turned out to be a boy!

are you saying that is the official position adopted by the church? which church ?

Beatrice is lovely, and a likely contender if i ever have a dd.

Both Beatrice and Hermione are strong and vivacious female characters in Shakespeare plays.

Go with one of them and don't worry about your church friends. If they make HP comments, tell them to read Winter's Tale if they really have a problem with it...

donnie - I really hope that it's not the official position adopted by the church as I don't see anything wrong with reading HP or seeing the films!!

the church I go to has a major thing against Harry Potter. They gave a sermon on it a while back with them saying how much of an evil influence it was on the children and us adults too. TBH it has put me off the church a lot as I love the HP books and still love the name Hermione!

Thanks for everyone's opinions on it, I am glad some of you said you wouldn't judge me harshly for using the name Hermione!

When I say 'my church', I mean the specific church I go to, not the denomination as a whole. I'm sure it's not the view of everyone at the church, but it was what was preached by the pastor and the elders were praying with people if they wanted to ask god to forgive them etc etc.

We had a sermon last year about not using star signs etc as they were bad too.

It's an Elim church though i'm sure the views are not representative of the Elim church as a whole!

I love Beatrice. Not sure I understand the church thing. It's fiction. If they grudge you the diversion of reading a good story, find a new church. Cos some churches will draw parallels between the lion the witch and the wardrobe and christianity.... so honestly, fgs, how is one a metaphor and the other frowned on.

Use the name you love.

LOL i'm christian and would never have thought about not using the name Hermione because of harr poter connection (by the way my fav name is hermione and will use if Dp agrees)

We have a daughter called lara (which apparently is the goddess of the underworld in greek mythology) and our rev things its a lovely name lol

i think it definetly depends on the church and who attends as to their opinions, some are very stern and strict it seems and others knock on your door and offer to take your 'usband to be'to the pub for a pint on a thursday night after choir practice!! lol

i think if the church you attend makes you feel uncomfortable about what you like to read and watch (a bit of fiction!!) then maybe you may need to consider finding one that is a little less stern in their views (not that their views are wrong..they maybe just don't match yours).
