Josiah - too similar to mum's name?

My name is Joanna but I often go by Jo. Is Josiah too similar to my name for DC2?- it will be shortened to Joss or Jay. We can't seem to agree on any other name.

How do you pronounce it?

VAB · 03/07/2009 15:11

Is it made up?

How about Josie?

SoupDragon · 03/07/2009 15:13

It's not made up! It;s a biblical name.

Joe-Zeye-a

SoupDragon · 03/07/2009 15:13

And it's a boys name.

I always thought so anyway.

PuppyMonkey · 03/07/2009 15:15

Yes, boy's name.

Joseph is nicer imho.

Mammina · 03/07/2009 15:17

Never heard it but it sounds nice. I would imagine most people would pronounce it Joe-Zaya though if they saw it written down, which may or may not bother you.

goomum · 03/07/2009 15:52

It is pronounced JO-SI-AH.
It is a biblical boy's name.

Some people say it JOZ- SI-AH.

We will never call him Joseph or Joe as too similar to Jo IMO. Do you this Josiah is as well?

it will be shortened to Jo.

you do not get to pick your kids nickname for certain.

you just don.t

if you want your kid called jay or joss - call it them

boodleboot · 03/07/2009 20:18

my nephew is called Josiah. we never call him that ever and only call him Jed. I love Jed but joss sounds like a cuss, like 'what a load of old joss' and Jay is only marginally better....IMO of course

cheesesarnie · 03/07/2009 20:22

i love it.never heard of it but love it.

pranma · 03/07/2009 21:28

I think its lovely [my dd is Joanna too]

Firawla · 03/07/2009 21:30

Can't believe people think that's a made up name!

I think its fine, not too close to the mum's name, and it is really nice

chegirl · 04/07/2009 17:03

Let me tell you something I have had the most trouble with this name since it became mine. No one can pronounce it. I get called Mrs Joshy, Josina, Josiana, Joosi, etc etc.

You would not believe the hassle I get with it. It looks very obvious to me exactly how it is pronounced but not to the rest of the world apparently.

Its a lovely name BTW.

I wanted to call my first DC Joshua but couldnt because it wouldve looked weird with surname.

Made up Well I suppose it is made up but about 2000 years ago.

procrastinatingparent · 04/07/2009 17:06

Josiah was a boy king over Israel in the Bible (2 Kings 21-22).

I love this name - but I would abbreviate it to Jed, as in Josiah Barlett, president in West Wing, called Jed for short.

Sadly, we have completed our family so this is not going to happen.

goomum · 05/07/2009 11:16

So far no one has said that Josiah is too similar to Jo - which is encouraging. I just don't want people to think I named DS after myself!

Any naysayers?

I think if people know you are the Jo and you call him something else for short they'll stick with that or call him something entirely different.

I didn't realise people didn't know Josiah as a name.

Have to admit though not to fond of Joss or Jay but they're not horrendous

Lovely
