please help me to convince DH on my name choices!!

Right, DH and I had a mild disagreement last night over baby names!! The problem is, I am a primary school teacher, and I associate names with children I have taught! Unfortunately all the names he likes, I hate, and vice versa! SO...I am bringing the names to you. Here are my choices, please give me some good reasons for them so I can stand in good stead and force convince DH to see the good things about my choices!

I can tell you from experience that being called Rebecca is very pleasant indeed. It's not enormously common, but everyone has heard of it. It is classy without being pretentious.

I can't help you with Jens and Kaj, though. Did you just make them up?

thanks mama...Rebecca is my middle name, and I love it...hated it as a kid, but it has grown on me! Unfortunately DH is not a reader though! I should read that book though...not heard of it!

My dd's name is Jaime and it's a beautiful name but then that's my opinion.

The only boys names on that list I would consider would be Jamie and perhaps Quinn (that would be with a lot of arm twisting). Your DH may be looking for more manly names for his son.

Remember that although some names might sound nice for a little boy - these boys grow up to be men and sometimes the name no longer fits. Try thinking of your little boy as a grown man before you settle on a name

thanks for responses...sophiesmummie, Jens and Kaj are of Danish heritage, which is my background as well. Jens is pronounced with the J as a Y sound, so it is pronounced
Y-ens and Kaj is pronounced K-iiiii

I primarily want a name that cannot be shortened...I do not mind nicknames, but I do not, as you said mrsradders, to have something like becky for rebecca.

DH is more wanting traditional/biblical way too common names like Catherine, Sarah, Matthew and John

oh melissa75 i have the same thing DH wants english traditional...although florence is in the running at the moment as my favourite hermione is too greek

i think hazel is maybe i nice compromise cannot be shortened and is traditional sounding without being boring or common!! (in the used very much sense not chavy sense) lol

You're right - 'Becky' is just plain horrible, and it does take some effort to stop people using it (they don't even ask first!).

I hear this all the time about a name making you think of someone else. The fact is when you name your child everytime you hear that name you only ever think of your child not the person you hated. I know some horrible people with my son's name but everytime someone mentions that persons name I immediately start to think about my little darling!

I know a lovely little girl called Hazel, so I would say that's my favourite. Of the rest only really like Rebecca. As for the boys, I like Jamie best and I don't think it's just a little boy's name.

What about Guy for a boy or Fleur for a girl ,both single syllable and difficult to shorten

Sarah is not common! How many have you taught? I bet none. John is not very common either.

Sorry, but if your dh doesn't like your name suggestions you will have to think of new ones, and so will he, until you find one you both like. It is very frustrating I know, when your partner can't see when you have suggested the perfect name.

I don't dislike Jens and Kaj but most British people will mispronounce them - go for something people will be able to say.

I'd go for Catherine and John out of those lists

alarkaspree...I actually have two Sarahs this year, and in the past five have had three! I do not mind Jonathon...but then it would be shortned to Jon most likely as an adult...and Jon I do not like! so makes it difficult!

We need to narrow it down, but we also need to know if it is a boy or girl!

Avril is pretty and unusual but not in a trying to hard way.
