Wilfred - what do you think? Seems old-fashioned at first, but growing on me...

After all, you can shorten to 'Wilf' or have optionality to go 'Wil' or 'Freddie' if they prefer. I think they are all quite cool. 3 names for the price of 1?

I really like it, but I like old-fashioned names. I really love Wilf! If I have a boy, he will be called Albert, so I think we are on the same wavelength.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 18/06/2009 10:07

I love it is DS's middle name, and my Dad's name.

Crumpets · 18/06/2009 10:11

Love it.

boodleboot · 18/06/2009 10:12

yup. gets thumbs up from me.

Buda · 18/06/2009 10:14

Like it. It is old fashioned but I think it is due a revival. I really like Wilf.

suwoo · 18/06/2009 10:22

It was my grandads name and my dads middle name. My dad hated it so much during childhood. He refused to take his 11+ exam as he had to state his full name in front of his classmates .

When I was pregnant with DS1 I really, really wanted to call him Wilfie, but my dad implored me not to.

I am now 32 weeks with DS2, my dad has suggested Wilf a couple of times- its too late now though . I feel like that was my 'could have been' name for DS1 and the moment has passed now.

DS2 will be Felix.

I am not keen on old mens names but it's OK. Freddie is nice. I'd worry about teasing etc at secondary school with an old fashioned name.

Issy123 · 18/06/2009 12:23

The old fashioned names are popular again and I don't think there will be teasing as it will be normal.

I like the name its really cool.

missblythe · 18/06/2009 12:24

very sweet

dollius · 18/06/2009 12:25

Love it, love it, love it

gegs73 · 18/06/2009 12:27

I don't think he would get teased for it. Wilf is a pretty cool name. Only thing that would probably drive him mad when he was older would be that people on the phone would think he was Will and mispell it all the time.

pedalmonster · 18/06/2009 15:07

suwoo I love Felix!
I don't like Wilf so much though, as it reminds me of MILF!

Wilfred is terrible sorry. And so is Wilf.

I live on St Wilfrid's (correct) Road too, so I should know.

sleeplessinstretford · 18/06/2009 15:36

my nephew freddie is called wilfred-the unanimous decision when they named him was it was fucking awful and was nobodies favourite name, however he's nearly 5 and it's not as hideous as we first thought!

smellyeli · 18/06/2009 15:41

I like Wilf. I think Hermione Norris's son (her from Cold Feet and Spooks) is called Wilf? Go for it,

Sunshinemummy · 18/06/2009 15:41

Yes I love it and I know a little boy called it too.

gladders · 18/06/2009 16:18

yup. like it. also like stanley - same sort of idea really...

campion · 18/06/2009 16:26

A little boy called it, sunshinemummy? Isn't there a book with that title?!

Sunshinemummy · 18/06/2009 16:28

Ooops sorry!

EyeballsandherSunburntNorks · 18/06/2009 16:29

Bramble. 'aaaarold!'

Momino · 18/06/2009 22:38

i really like it - have an uncle Wilf and would have liked to use the name but 1) it wouldn't go with our surname beginning with a 'W' and 2) we had a girl!

great name and like all the nicknames

Merle · 26/06/2009 06:52

It's a great name. (We have one, spelt the old-english way). It has the advantage of being a name that most people have heard of, but which is not over-popular- he'll be the only one in the school. If you look back at the records for the past century you'll see that there have only been a few years when there have been over a thousand registered in England & Wales. It's also been nice to have a lot of people say 'that was my grandad's name' - so I think that people tend to have fond associations.

womma · 26/06/2009 23:31

I like Wilf

Bonneville · 26/06/2009 23:34

Yes a good proper name.
