I'm sorry to me it sounds a bit like a pet's name...or a cabaret performer.. imagine if she works in a customer service environment when she's older and having to give her name to customers 50 times a day. She'd had to laugh off jokes about Lulu the singer about 40 times a day.

I called my DD Lula as a NN (real name Lucia) but I'd never ever use it as a full name- sorry I don't like being negative. How about Lucie, Lucy, Luella, Talullah, Louisa?

I think that if she chooses to have a sensible career she may appreciate a more formal name, you don't know what kind of person she will be.

The other thing to consider with Lulu is potential playground taunts- 'loo'? etc. I don't think the botoxed scottish singer will feature that prominently on the radar of children her age.

Alternatively if you really want that to be her name (which I understand, tbh, if that's her name then that's her name and everyone should call her it) then choose a 'sensible' middle name, so she can pick and choose.

Lulu by itself as a full name is fine, it means pearl in Arabic

oh dear. i metioned the name to my daughter and she said completely deadpan...'erm no, what do call a girl with two toilets on her head.....'

she is 9....this must be a school jokes thing.

My DD has a 'long' name, but has only ever been known by a much shorter version at home and at school (along Lulu/Tallulah lines, but less well used). She does know that she has a longer name, but only because I've told her! I'm glad we gave her the longer name, as I think it gives her choices when she's older. If she never uses it, that's fine - but at least she will have the choice.

Love it!

Me too, lovely!

Bathsheba · 17/06/2009 09:26

My DD2 has Louise as a middle name, and I call her Lulu a lot as a pet name...

LuLuBai · 17/06/2009 09:47

All the best people have Louise as a middle name

saintmaybe · 17/06/2009 10:26

Wolfear, WHY are you 'not expecting her to be prime minister to be honest' ???

Just out of interest?

Thelongroadhome · 18/06/2009 23:03
